Will DDR4 3000 work with my kabylake 7700k?

I just got my Kaby Lake 7700k! My new ASRock z270 extreme4 will be here Wednesday!

now what about RAM?

The 7700k says it supports ddr4 2133/2400

I want to buy the CORSAIR Vengeance LED 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3000 (PC4 24000) Desktop Memory Model CMU16GX4M2C3000C15 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=20-236-076

Will the ddr4 3000 still work just just at 2400? Or should I just get ddr4 2400?

If I overclock the CPU will it use the ddr4 3000 faster then the 2400?

Wow I feel dumb.

yes it will work, just run at 2400 Mhz by default without some BIOS tinkering

honestly unless the price diff is small just get 2400

That's why I'm asking the cosair vengeance led is less expensive then the cosair dominator by $45.

Why do motherboards like thez270 support so many higher RAM speeds then the processors for the board can use??

It's a form of overclocking supported on Z boards.  The XMP profile enables the boards to overclock the memory further.  By default, the CPU memory controller determines the RAM speed.

There's really no performance different.  It's corsair's premium RAM brand, you're paying mostly for the name and look.

The ddr4 3000 is just less expensive then the ddr4 2400 right now (and it looks great!)

Thanks everyone I think that solves the question.

I did a bunch more reading and it sounds like the processor (i7 7700k) will default to the 2400 reguardless of ram speed. But the board asrock z270 and the processor are able to run the ram at faster speeds if I enable it on the bios XMS profile.

So thre "good looking" ddr4 3000 that cost $45 less then the ddr4 2400 is on it way!

  • 2 months later...

Pwent you can use whatever ram the MOTHERBOARD states it accepts, the chip will work with that just fine, you are not limited to 2133 / 2400.
