Hey guys,

I've never built a PC before, but I've been doing my research for the past few months and I've decided to go for it.  I'd like to build a PC by July of 2017.

I won't use it for gaming, but I will need to run multiple large 1440p or 4k monitors (I'll be using it as my trading system - I trade equities).

I haven't been able to find much info on the requirements of multiple monitors.  Do I need more than one graphics card to run multiple monitors?  In a perfect world, I'd like to run three (maybe four)  36 inch or larger monitors at 4k.  Can I run that all from a high end GPU, or would multiple less-powerful GPUs be better?  Do I have to have a certain number of output ports on each card, or can you run multiple cards through one port with dongles or whatever?

I just really have no idea what is required to run several large 4k monitors, so any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Graphics cards can handle at least three monitors at once. However, there might be a combination restriction (DVI and 2 DP, or HDMI and 2 DP, or 3 DP).

And if it's purely desktop work, then almost any modern GPU can drive multiple 4K displays with no issue.

For triple monitor gaming, go with the X80 or Titans on green.

For single monitor gaming, go with any GPU.

For general use, go with any GPU with three or more outputs.

What purpose do you have?

Anything with the proper dsiplay output will work, dunno if a workstation card would be worth it, they tend to come with only display port outputs

but here's an RX 470 with 3 display port outputs, I'd get something like that with a reasonable amount of power behind it

You may need display adapters though

If you want lower power/low profile it might be worth getting a workstation card at that point, sitll probably not though

Hey guys, thanks for the responses.

I'll be running a setup similar to this guy:

I trade like he does, and the goal is to be able to display as many charts as possible and not have to click through screens.  I'll probably do three 4k monitors like in the above video, and I might add another screen on top, or just do four 4k screens in portrait mode.

So based on what you guys are saying, it sounds like any gpu from the past few years can push this many pixels easily.  In that case, it comes down to the number of outputs on the card?

Most cards have like two outputs of one type, and a third output of a different type.  If I'm running three to five of the same monitor, won't it be best to use the same type of port on each one?

Are there dongles to split a single displayport IO into multiple cables?  Should I just get three cheap GPUs and put them in SLI?  Which IO ports would be best for this, and which graphics cards have the most ports?

Lots of questions, I know.  Thanks for any help, I really appreciate it.  I'd rather do this myself than hire someone to do it for me, so I can stand on my own two feet.
