Newer CPU's better in performance than Older CPU's?

So here is the thing. If i compare an i7 2600 vs i5 6500, on paper the i7 is faster than the new i5.

http://www.game-debate.com/cpu/index.php?pid=639&pid2=2...

It says that i7 is almost 7% better in performance than the new i5. But thats performance on paper. My question is that will the new i5 perform better than the i7 2600 in newer games like Watch Dogs 2 or Battlefield 1? I am currently using the i7 2600 3.4ghz with my gtx 1060 3gb and it bottlenecks like hell... Watch Dogs 2 gives 30 fps. Changing graphics settings or resolution doesnt affect the performance either. (Thats a bottleneck right?).

You also need to take into consideration the newer RAM speeds. And odds are if they are testing a 2600 its probably a 2600k and that means the OC it. But taking it at face value they are pretty similar in preformance, and the i7 is much better in P4P

Why are my fps in games so terrible then? In like every game: tomb raider, division, far cry primal, watch dogs 2, forza horizon 3... im pretty sure i should be able to get more than 30 fps on the lowest settings ?

Probably driver issues. Your CPU should boy bneck this much.

Ultra is stupid. ALWAYS.

Do you have MSI afterburner? What do you your GPU clocks / GPU usage look like over time as you game?

If it's a CPU bottleneck, the GPU usage will jump or drop suddenly.

The CPU shouldn't bottleneck that bad though.

Maybe not enough Vram? 3GB is not very much at all.

On msi after burner gpu is at full speed....gpu clock is 1974 mhz and memory clock is 4006mhz. Most of the games cpu usage is hovering between 98-100% and gpu usage at 60-80%. Drivers are up to date.

Yeah, that CPU is pinned to the limit. The GPU should mostly stay within 2-5%. The GPU clock is good.

Sadly you don't have a overclockable CPU. My 2500K still rolls around pretty well because of the 4.6GHz OC.

Can it be the cpu temps? its between around 85 degrees on stock cooler. new thermal paste but gonna buy an after market cooler tomorrow. I havent overclocked anything either.

85 degrees??? Not OK you need to get that fixed dude. Probably thermal throttling

Hmm, yes, it can be. If you use a program like CPU-Z, you can tell if the CPU clock drops suddenly or reduces. 85 degrees is really hot.

Don't use those "comparison" sites. They're utter trash and just compare the specs and usually don't take into account ipc and stuff. Game debate is ok but still nowhere as good as real benchmarks from sites like toms hardware or Anandtech. If you want real comparisons you can check out things such as Anandtech Bench.

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

Cooler Master Hyper TX3 EVO CPU Cooler

I would recommend getting a hyper 212 Evo if it fits. This one is a tad small, but it's still better than the stock heatsink.

Likely due to throttling.

Afaik I cannot 100% remember the throttling temp... think its 85*c...

My 2600k was at 80*c with an OC.

85*c is my personal l8mit for SB CPUs.

They throttle past 85*c and will restart the PC at 105*c.

Re-seat the cpu with a new cooler and that should likely all dissapear.

85*c way too warm for my liking.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

eh, if you have the money, yeah. It is a lot of money to put down though...new CPU, mobo, and RAM (DDR4).

I myself kind of am debating on upgrading to a 7700K from my 2500K.

The IPC gains for games would see benefits for sure.

The IPC can make up some of the multithreaded abilities of the 2600.

So if you did this.

Games =faster better stronger by decent margins..

Encoding=slower but still not much alower.

you don't. The RAM doesn't make much difference

They'll perform similarly, with the 6500's IPC improvements basically canceling out the 2600's hyperthreading. If you're going to upgrade, go for a 6700

I think it is like a 25% increase though from 3-4

Ok so guys i got the new cooler. Idles at around 40degrees and when gaming its around 60 degrees max and this is in summer (Australia -_-). But the lag in games is still there. So it wasnt a cpu throttle. It was definitely a bottleneck. Anyways is it possible to overclock a non K? if no should i upgrade or nah?
