Hi all,

So I overclocked my i7 6700k (first time overclocker) to 4.6 ghz. at 1.37 volt.

I ran a stability test (AIDA 64) for about 15 hours and the CPU didnt go above 81°C.

Everything seemed fine, even gamed a bit on it.

The multiplier is at 46, and I'm using an AIO watercooler.

But upon rebooting once the overclock failed immediately.

I then upped the voltage to 1.40 because upping it to 1.38 and 1.39 crashed immediately after the stability test.

After that ( 24 hour stability test, AIDA 64) everything seems fine at 1.40 volt.

Please note I'm also running an overclock on my GTX 1070 (MSI Aero OC) [+300 core, +500 memory]

What am I doing wrong here?

I've also noticed that turning XMP on in my BIOS settings fails when overclocking.

Full specs:

CPU: Intel i7 6700k

MB: Asus 170 Pro Gaming/Aura

RAM: Kingston Hyper X Black 16 GB (2100 MHz)

GPU MSI GTX 1070 Aero OC

SSD: Samsung EVO 500 GB

HDD: Western Digital 1TB (Don't really know the model)

Sounds like an unstable oc. I am at 4.5 just to keep things a little cooler and have 0 problems

Alright so keep the multiplier at 45 and everything should be fine?

The temps are still stable at 83 max and 67 avg right now.

I was thinking of keeping it like this, since I didn't cross the 1.4 volt threshold.

Now rebooting also works fine, but I do get a much longer black screen when the GPU overclock takes effect.

Unless someone has another thought on why it is crashing like that. I think you might just want to keep it at 4.5ghz my base clock is also at 103 so its like 4.534 or something. running auto volt at 1.3 auto to keep temps within a reasonable window for my own personal preference. I like longevity and consistency of build over marginally higher performance coupled with shorter lifespans and less stability. GOOD LUCK with your oc whatever you choose!

Fair point about the longevity. I didn't up the base clock, it's still at 100.

I'll try running at a base clock of 103 and multiplier of 44, however what voltage do you suggest then or should I just keep on auto?

Alright this is what I'm at now:

I overclocked my CPU to 4.6 GHz with a base clock of 100 , multiplier of 46 and voltage of 1.325

The stress test has been running for about 8 hours and the temps max out at 76°C

I did have to lower the overclock on my GPU (+200 core, +400 memory).

So it seems the GPU overclock was the problem, not the CPU overclock. (Or a combination of the two)

EDIT: Like I said in the OP first time overclocker, so it's been a bit trial and error, but it has been a valuable learning experience.

EDIT 2: I'll leave the stress test running for another 16 hours.
