Setting two focus points

Testcatt

Hi,

This is probably the wrong forum to post to but I recently bought a Canon 80D DSLR camera and have been testing it a little bit and was wondering if it's possible to set two focus points and then make the camera jump from one focus point to another.

This is a bit hard to explain but it's kind of like this shot https://gfycat.com/ImpoliteLegalAtlasmoth

I'm trying to get a shot where it's not in focus and then in focus, is this only possible manually? I got that shot by turning off "Movie AF" and focusing it all the out of focus and then turning at back on and letting the camera focus it correctly.

I kind of can't do this manually because my cheap tripod shakes around when i'm manually changing the focus and then the whole shot gets ruined.

Thanks a lot!

If you want to do focus pulling manually, invest in a follow focus.  You can find cheap models on eBay.

It's probably not possible on an 80D, that's a video feature that is usually only available on medium to high end camcorders. Most motorized Follow focus systems will do it, but they are expensive and complicated.

As the others have said something like a follow focus could help. Or maybe just a sturdier tripod so you can do it manually.

When doing it manually, it might be easier to do it backwards, an then reverse it in post.

A motorized FF system is not really necessary, a sturdy tripod or rig and a mechanical FF system or anything that puts a set of gears or levers in between the human hand and the lens' focus ring will do the job.  Another issue I would foresee is the back LCD on a DSLR like the 80D is pretty small.  A larger monitor would be better for accurate manual focus pulling.
