Help CPU swap

Go to solution Solved by Coldfuson,

Please mark as solved. Cheers! Glad to hear the rig is back up and running.

So i upgraded my system from a g3258 to a 4790k on a msi sli krait edition z97 mobo. I turn on my system and i am forced to press f11 to be able to go into my OS drive. I never had to do this before and in my bios i cannot find my OS drive to set it up to 1 priority in my bios. So if i do boot onto my drive the first time i didnt have to go through those steps and it loaded straight to the windows 8 lock screen after that i left and my [c was frozen. now when i boot the windows ogo appears and it says repairing drive or something and my moniter turns oss and nothing happens if i just skip the repair in the advanced options. sorry this is so rushed but i really just want to use my pc plz help. so conclusion is i am able too boot until the loading screen then my mouse keyboard and moniter turns off and nthing happens

Did you upgrade anything else OTHER than the CPU?

We need to know this.

As mentioned by @ForsakenLive have you tried loading the default BIOS settings?

Another option is to clear the CMOS:

  1. Turning the computer off
  2. Switch the PSU off (the switch on the back)
  3. Unplugging the PSU from the wall socket
  4. Removing the little flat battery from the motherboard
  5. Wait for 5 ~ 10 minutes
  6. Put battery back in
  7. Reconnect PSU, and turn computer back on

Otherwise, you could also try updating the BIOS to a newer version -- you will need to your G3258 back in first.

That's a good sign; motherboard information, and able to access the BIOS.

Windows will automatically jump into the "automatic repair" state after a couple of unsuccessful power-on's.

Go into the BIOS now, and check the settings, and see if your Windows boot disk shows up there now.

Make sure everything else is detected properly.

Also, give us the BIOS version while you are in there.

Double check that none of your RAM sticks is loose.

What you do mean your monitor turns off?

Does it go into stand-by / sleep mode?

Just to rule the problem out, make sure you connect your keyboard + mouse to USB 2.0 ports (NOT blue USB 3.0 ports)

Your keyboard and mouse should not just "turn off" ...unless there is a problem (e.g. hardware problem).

If that's the situation, then you will need to thoroughly inspect your computer (e.g. RAM, HDD, etc).

If all else fails, then you will need to:

  • Check the CPU heatsink
  • Check the CPU (take it out and check with your eyes)
  • Check the motherboard socket for any damaged or bent pins
  • Put your G3258 back in if you MUST

You might have gotten a broken i7-4790K...you won't be able to test that out if you DON'T put your G3258 back in.

The monitor goes j to power saving mode and the keyboard and mouse turn off like this all.the time even when my stem worked. I hope.the CPU is not dead the only reason I got it was cause I was in America and itwas really cheap at Microcenter compared to australia. How would you like me to check the heatsink (deep cool captain 240) I also checked if the ram was seated correctly

Have you checked that there is nothing wrong with the hardware first?

  • When I said heatsink, I was referring to make sure it is making proper contact with the CPU -- do the CPU is not overheating.
  • Check the CPU for any signs of damage -- if you systeem work 100% okay with your G3258 again, then something is wrong with the i7-4790K.
  • Check the motherboard socket for any bent pins.

What Operating System are you using?

In your first post you mentioned Windows 8, and you are saying Windows 8.1?

Do you also have...Windows 10 or 7 as dual-boot?

Do you have a second hard drive / SSD in the system?

Are all your HDD / SSD's detected within the BIOS?

Do you have any Windows recovery media?

The chance of a CPU replacement should typically not corrupt the Windows installation, so something clearly happened.

There are so many questions that we don't have any answers to...

We need to you answer them, so we can find out what the heck happened.

I usually run windows 10 but it is dual booted with 8.1. my OS is on an ssd and I have 2 other hard drives that just have programs. The CPU is staying at 30° so I don't think it is over heating. Should I re seat it? I don't think I have any recovery media. All my HDDs are detected. I guess I will have to check for bent pins

Try to reinstall windows, maybe after a hardware change the software side got messed up some how.

I have run into that problem (automatic repair then diagnosing stuff auto run...) and it was RAM related issue, so try to rearrange your RAM sticks.

CPU: Ryzen 2 2700@ 4.0Ghz    Mobo: Gigabyte X470 Gaming 7 Wifi    Cooler: EVGA CLC 240    GPU: GTX1080 FTW DT @ 2113Mhz   PSU: EVGA 750W P2

I don't think you can reinstall fresh copy of Windows from that recovery disk. Use the microsoft media creation tools on their website to create a bootable USB stick for Windows 7 and reinstall. If you still have the CD key, use that. Since windows 10 the windows license is attached to my Microsoft account so no matter where I install windows or where I misplaced my cd key, I can still activate windows. Not sure about windows 7

Obviously to do this, you need to get on another computer.

Nah man I just used my laptop and it's CD reader to.put windows 7 on my system. it's all working now I think the os just got corrupted for some reason. 4790k is working like a dream I have it at 4.5ghz i may go back to 4.4 but there is no instability. I also need to get the voltage off auto cause it's kinda lazy. Tho one time my brother hit the desk and the pc froze up then I had the same issue where windows would.load then black screen but I think I was a bit to early to rush in and reinstall after that cause once I reinstalled the screen went black again but after a bit fully booted so... Idk. do.you think having the CPU at 4.5 really degrades it tbh it's only a 0.1ghz of its default turbo I want to keep this CPU for a few years hopefully like how people.still use 2600k's.like luke FROM LTT.
