Hi mates!

I’m trying to build a PC for my dad’s office that is currently rocking (at best, can’t remember right now) a DDR2 system. He is trying to spend 500 EUR taxes non included, so it's like 610 EUR tax included, but we can manage to arrive at 700 tax included.

He doesn't have the slightest clue on what to get, he's not a tech savy by any mean so i'm trying to build him a solid pc for office use and with some "futureproofing". He has to use a specific suite of programs that require at least 8 GB of ram (or so they say) and other DB management software, he's a medic.

That's what i have come up with so far https://it.pcpartpicker.com/list/X4Wh2R and i kinda need a case (nothing fancy, a micro-ATX should be fine) and a PSU that isn't too expensive but not auto-inflammable, also because there's no need for a GPU, the integrated one will work just fine.

Monitor for now he can keep the old one and what really hit me was the price of the i5-6500, the 6400 is 40 EUR cheaper but isn't the 6500 the "value" one? Correct me if i'm wrong.

Thank you for any help that you are able to give me, also suggestions for the parts that i already picked are appreciated as well!

I can't believe that I'm saying this but I would actually go for a pre-built PC for this use case. If you aren't planning on using a graphics card (therefore don't need a good power supply or case), you can probably get the same specs for about $100 cheaper if you buy pre-built. They aren't all that bad, plenty stable, just make sure you know the specs and are ready to uninstall some bloatware.

Main PC: i5 4590 @ 3.5 GHz ♦ RX 480 Armor OC ♦ 16 GB DDR3 ♦ GA-Z97-HD3 ♦ 120 GB 840 EVO ♦ 120 GB Intel 520 ♦ W10 Home

Scrapyard PC: Xeon X5460 @ 3.8 GHz ♦ HD 7870 ♦ 8 GB DDR2 ♦ GA-P35-DS3L ♦ 80 GB Intel 320 ♦ 160 GB WD Caviar SE ♦ W10 Home

I built the same for my dad's work, but with one monitor, no HDD and haswell, because skylake wasnt around back then :)

Look for Corsair CXM or Seasonic S12II in your country. Should be cheap

Also for case, any should be fine really. It's not like he need airflow for GPU/CPU performance

Maybe EVGA 450W 500B/600B for budget too. They will be fine

What programs does he use?
I really, really doubt you need to go with an i5. I'm willing to put a lot of money on an i3, or even a Pentium being more than capable of doing what he needs. Don't use future proofing as a valid reason, because it's not.

Does he really need 525GB of storage on an office PC? I can get away with multitudes less.

Why are you going with such an expensive motherboard?

I see many places in this build where there's unnecessary money being spent.

6400 actually has nice boost clock so it's only maybe 3-5% slower, would take it over 6500.

True, except in this use case neither are needed.

There's always reasons to get a good PSU...like ones that don't cause fires ;)

I agree though, sometimes prebuilts are decent deals because of the discounts they get on Windows.

CPU is too powerful, RAM is too expensive, otherwise not bad.

Well. I know an i3 and 8GB is enough but some demanding task would be nice to have an i5 and 16gb RAM (rendering something maybe) and plus it fits his budget by only 6 euros more. Most 16gigs RAM start at 90-100 euros

For office use you can't go wrong with Dell Optiplex.

There's an Optiplex 3040 with i5-6500 and 8GB of ram for 580€ (MT) or 596€ (SFF) at Mindfactory.de.

Dell will be most sensible.

That feels overpriced. Look up. I got him a decent PSU and 16gigs of RAM for just 610 euros which is 30 more.

For an office build, I'd do this.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Pentium G4500 3.5GHz Dual-Core Processor  (€80.58 @ Amazon Italia)
Motherboard: ASRock H110M-HDS Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  (€57.99 @ Amazon Italia)
Memory: Mushkin Essentials 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory  (€92.14 @ Amazon Italia)
Storage: Crucial MX300 275GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  (€79.99 @ Amazon Italia)
Case: Antec NSK3100 MicroATX Mini Tower Case  (€35.61 @ Amazon Italia)
Power Supply: Antec EarthWatts Green 380W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply  (€57.60 @ Amazon Italia)
Total: €403.91

It's a Pentium, yes, however it has a high clock. It's two core will be more than enough for office based tasks, web browsing, etc. An i3 is only 40 Euro more, and that would definitely be more than enough.

If he is, sure. I don't believe that's the case though. The RAM I agree with amount wise, but not price wise. There's no point in spending extra money on something that has no impact on performance.

Budget doesn't mean "go to the max", it can be less.

looks good, but the case is too big for the motherboard and i'd recommend mini itx, since you dont need the extra space

Thanks for all the feedback guys! So, in order

I tried convincing him that an i5 isn't really that necessary but i can go down to i3s, no further: the suite isn't that light and it won't be the only thing running knowing my father. I went with that mobo cos it has 4 slots of ram in case he wants to upgrade to 32 (really don't know) and H110 has only 2 slots. I can tune down the SSD too!

Also, the memory kit is the cheapest i could find. Damn ddr4 is still expensive, my build is stil ddr3 based.

EDIT

I just found out that the 6400 is limited to 2 memory channels at 2133MHz max, so back to the drawing board for memory i guess, considering that the ones i chose are 2400.
