First off, I accidentally fucking pressed the trash can button, I am so FUCKING pissed right now. I am going to make a rant about apple, if you like apple, fine, no offense, but I am going to write this shit anyway.

So my friend said a week ago that they are going soon to buy a macbook. I was like "What the f***, no!". And my friend thinks PC is superior to apple as much as the next enthusiast gamer. Now, they bought the iMac and I thought why? Why iMac? What is so much better in it?

And I decided first to compare specifications and price.

Apple iMac specs are here and my PC is on my profile. My computer is ~1000€ and has 4th Generation Haswell i5 4460 clocked at 3.2GHz, and boost up to 3.4. This iMac has 3.2 GHz Skylake i5, boosted up to 3.6. This means that the clock speeds are not comparable.

But what about GPU and ram? Well, now that I mentioned, if you put my GTX 970 and the iMac R9 M380 in a fight, my 970 would K.O that piece of electronic crap in one hit. Here are two different sites : GPUBoss and Game-Debate. My pc also has 16GB of DDR3 ram clocked at 1333MHz, while the iMac has 8GB of DDR3 ram clocked at 1867MHz.

The clock speeds have almost no if any performance difference so I win again.

Also, I have a 128GB SanDisk X110 SSD in my pc giving me a lot faster bootspeeds than the iMac with it's 1TB 7200RPM HDD.

So I'm pretty sure I can say that my PC delivers more bang for the buck.

Well then, why iMac? My friend's mom never really gave any, other than "I don't need a gaming PC."

Gaming PC means usually high-end and powerful PC (mine being mid-range-ish.) and for 2149€ I'd have very high expectations of the specifications.

I mean you can get for that amount of money i7 6700k and GTX 1080 for god's sake. And the motto of that damn shop is "It's stupid to pay too much." Oh the irony. (talking about Gigantti, local Finnish electronics superstore, not apple)

I looked for some reasons why apple is better than windows and found this little biased site and you can look the reasons yourself, some of these were

"The experience" and what they mean by this that even an autistic monkey can use the iOS, it's that simple. Well, maybe not in the literal way but they said that ", OS X El Capitan is clean, refined, stable, easy to use interface, that to our tastes is a far, far nicer place to spend your time." So I guess when windows was made so that not-so-advanced people can use it, including my 94 years old grandpa,a veteran who fought in the Winter War and has grenade pieces moving inside his head. (If you want to know more, I'll surely tell) And he uses his computer, WINDOWS, everyday for casual surfing, checking out Facebook, reading news etc.

Another reason was "Seamless integration with iOS through Hand-Off" and here comes the bias. I use Samsung J5, and I have a Samsung tablet so that is NOT a reason why apple is superior, because the writer is assuming that you are already using an iPad and iPhone, or Apple watch or whatever so if this is the case, then the integration is great for you! But ONLY if you want to spend another 500€ for a new phone.

Third reason, "There are too many PCs to choose from". Simple. Build your own. No knowledge? Youtube videos OR at least here our local computer store builds it for you for mere 50€. And if you have the money to buy a 2000€ custom built computer, you probably got money for that 50€ extra too. Right?

Here comes the reason number four! "Security" Now we all know where this is heading. iOS is linux based, linux has LESS malware than Windows. Either you are too lazy to download BitDefender and surf safely or then you can use Ubuntu. Ubuntu is even better! It's free! And if somebody has access to your computer physically and locally, you're vulnerable, no matter the os. New reason! "They come with excellent software included" And some of these are "Photos, iMovie, Garageband, Pages, Numbers, Keynote, FaceTime, iTunes, Maps" Some call this junk, me I call them... Bloatware. Windows 10 comes with pretty much the equivalents, there is LibreOffice, then there is the video-editor-that's-open-source but I forgot the name as I use Vegas Pro 13.

Dun dun duun! Reason number something! " Build quality". " if you want a device that is built to the highest standards, with top-grade components, elegant styling and almost fanatical attention to detail, then Macs are some of the most beautiful consumer electronic products on the market right now." Buy cool NZXT LED strips, Corsair LED fans and some super-cool Fractal Design case. Styling done. Want top-grade components? Well, I think I already proved, that's not what you're getting.

More reasons! "Apple optimises the components", "many people just want a machine that works. Unfortunately, one of the negatives of upgrading a PC is the conflicts that arise and the issues faced when the required drivers are missing." This is complete bullshit. I have never had ANY issues upgrading my ram, my GPU or adding a DVD drive and had driver conflicts or them missing. If you do, you did it wrong.

"Macs have the best screens" Yes, the Retina screen. I have never actually used it. Never seen it. This is a point that I cannot exactly say anything about. I think Asus and BenQ do decent enough job with their monitors. They are fine.

"Customer support" Again, something I have not, experienced, but something I have experienced is Hewlett-Packards customer support and it. Is. Shit. Guess for that price they should have decent enough support. But then again, your little macbook goes pop when the warranty goes off, what you do? Get it to official apple store. I can fix my PC myself or take it to a technician. They don't need to be approved by microsoft after all.

So yeah. Thanks for being my therapist today. And I didn't exactly know where to write this. Mods please move it to the correct section if misplaced this.

iOS is not Linux based and neither is OS X in case you thought that. They're both partially based on various flavours of BSD.

Linux is licensed under GPL, which stipulates that anything derived from it ( like Android) has to be open source and grant its users all the freedoms that Linux does, which Apple would hate to do.

Yes, that is true. OP meant it is Unix based (many ppl get the two confused).

Also as a response to OP, you have to be very patient with non-techies to explain why PCs are better for certain use cases. People can only think about what they understand. Many people don't understand when better performance might be useful, because they "have never had an issue with their macbook". So, you have to explain very calmly, in simple segments, the benefits and use cases of PCs.

While I agree with most, if not all of your points, explicit language is against the forum rules, so there's that.

Also, no need to be too intense, most of us here in the LTT forums are not fully in agreement with everything that apple does.

Better dead than Red.

Apple is into marketing. That is what most of the "apple tax" goes to fund. Just like Bose speakers and Beats headphones. If you were in there position, you would do the same thing to bring in the money.

You also need to consider audience. And as others have mentioned, this particular forum is not the target audience for Apple computers. Apple's target audience does not know what "SSD" stands for, and they don't care. They trust Apple.

As for my experience, I once called Apple support to help figure out the issue with my iPhone 4's antenna, and the support goober started explaining to me about the non-breakable glass technology that is used in fighter jets. To which I asked, "is that the type of glass used to make my phone?" And of course the goober responded with "no." Yes, indeed, the support goober made me question my sanity. I never found out why Apple did such a crappy job designing the iPhone 4's antenna, and the goober was of very little help.

But the company also built a massive circular building on some of the most expensive land in the world. They must be doing something right. And I'm sure we can all agree it isn't the products nor the support.

If i had the money I'd buy an iMac in addition to my gaming PC aswell. It has a beautiful display and the specs are more than enough for a normal user. Hell, my dad is using a raspberry pi as a daily driver, compare the specs of that to the iMac. Sure Apple is overpriced but why not when you have the money. I don't see anyone saying that certain car manufacturers are overpriced either. I was an apple hater until i had to work on a mac mini, it's kind of what linus described in some iPhone review. Even if you are a tech guy, it can be nice to have a system that is just simple to use and apple delivers when it comes to that.
