Remember those huge desktop PC's that ran Windows 98 or XP?  Remember those 4:3 monitors that weighed over 30lbs?  They're not quite acceptable for today uses but with some modern day hardware it would be pretty cool.  I would love to see a sleeper build with over kill hardware like a high end Intel core i7, 2 GTX 1080's in SLI, and storage and RAM for days.  It would be an interesting project to see the challenges that they would face assembling this frankstein system.  But let's not stop there.  How about removing the ball from a old mouse and convert it to a laser mouse?  Or convert an old keyboard to mechanical?  I know it's not very realistic but would be neat if they gave it a shoot.  I bet that Free Geek place you guys used in scrapyard wars would be a great place to start.  What do you guys think of this? #outofideas

I've seen a few build logs from members who have done sleeper pc's, and it's nothing new to be honest. Would be a cool video if it was a challenge for something like scrapyard wars, but other than that it probably wouldn't be anything new/special.

the old beige cases are ATX standard but they do have the PSU sitting on top of the CPU which has fallen out of fashion with more powerful TDP requirements. they also only have 80mm fans so they arent really sleeper builds if they are loud. I put a core 2 duo in a pentium 2 era case a long time ago and i couldnt wait to afford an upgrade

Its easier to pain optical/laser mouse to look like ball mouse. I mean the design isn't so different between late 90s and today. Even mice from early 00s look like current ones. Same with keyboards. Earliest are mech. Membranes and chiclets were cheaper and easier to make, thats why they are still more common.

Imo making those really old P2 era cases to have modern insides isn't that interesting. Its more fun to see people who have old Dell or IBM machines converted to modern ones. Because those look like classics. Or if someone would have old iMac with modern insides.

I like that iMac idea. I would do it, but I've got nowhere to dispose of the CRT. I have 4 of the G3's, as you see on my profile.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2

There are. I just keep them around for parts. 2 of them work, so I'm not getting rid of those. (You have absolutely no idea what it took to get them working.)
