I am wondering how I can ssh into my Mac when I am not on the network. For this computer I have already setup port forwarding on my AirPort Extreme to access its files remotely, I can also SSH into my Mac already while I am on the same network. But how do I do it remotely?

If you already set up port forwarding, you just need to ssh to  your public ip instead of the local one. Googling 'my public ip' usually gives it right to you.

Make sure you have the correct port forwarded (22 is the default) then try to connect to your computer.

 

I wouldn't recommend this though as it would be rather easy for someone to break into your computer with a simple username and password. Better to use a vpn to get into your network or better yet use key based authentication with is practically impossible to crack.

 

Whatever you do, change the WAN port that you are forwarding to LAN port 22 to something else that isn't used.

Thank you so much, this worked perfectly. I found out that there was an issue with my router when adding ports it would delete them. But the terminal command what what I was looking for. Thanks again!
