So i was given the task of picking the parts for a pc that was capable of 360 and 4k video editing. This is what i came up with, however since this is my first workstation-style config, i wanted to get some opinions about it before i gave the list to the friend who asked for my help. So without further ado, here's the list:

Intel Core i7-6700K Skylake Quad-Core

GeForce GTX 1080

MSI C236A Workstation LGA 1151 Intel C236 ATX Intel Motherboard

CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 32GB DDR4

SAMSUNG 850 PRO 2.5" 512GB ( or 1TB )

SEAGATE 4TB 7200 RPM HD

SEASONIC M12II-750 750w PSU

Is it too bad? or was i not too off the mark?

that motherboard seems really out of place.

1. youre not running xeons

2. youre not running ECC memory

3. i dont know if it can overclock

Switch to a Z170 motherboard

That workstation board supports Xeons and ECC memory, and that's about it in terms of special features. It cannot overclock. Also, @TheForeignEnemy, you do not need a 750W PSU. A 550W one would be fine, and 650W can run SLI.

Should be X99 minimum,

You have the wrong motherboard

you'd want a 960 pro or other NVME drive most likely

HGST 4TB drives or bust

in addition potentially a Fire Pro card, quadro cards are pricey as fuck

but you don't a 1080, a 4GB RX 470 would be fine just for acceleration

What's the budget and display set up?

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

I think i'm going to change the motherbord for a Z170 as @mok suggested.

For the graphics card, wouldn't 4GB fall a bit short for handling 4K and 360° 1080p footage? (I often hear that significant amounts of VRAM are necessary for 4K anything, then again i could be wrong).

The budget is not a fixed thing, the guy is going to be buying the parts paycheck by paycheck, so he will maybe change the list a little and buy all the parts in the span of about half a year or so.

Usually not worth buying it piece by piece aside from like a case or hard drive on sale

an 8GB 480 then, about the cheapest 8gb card I believe

Was premier the software that was going to be used? because I was basing the performance gains off this, so long as you have a GPU of some kind, you get solid acceleration

Not a good approach. Even six months will see significant changes in what is available. Far, far better to save for six months and then buy the entire system. If one were to buy a cpu today, it would likely have 5% - 10% less performance than those that will be available at the same price in 3 - 6 months. If one were to buy an ssd today, it's likely that a higher capacity unit will be available at the same cost in six months.

Besides, buy a motherboard today, cpu next month. What if the motherboard has an issue. It's too late for a store exchange, so one has to go through the warranty claim process.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

Ok, i'll try to get him to switch his buying strategy.

Well, thank you all for the help, I'll revise the parts list based on your suggestions and see what happens.

Happy new year and once again thank you.
