Hi All,

 

I'm having issues connecting my new 4k monitor to my pc because of the limitations of its output sockets (HDMI 1.4, no DP).

 

If I bought a graphics card with a display port socket, would that allow me to run 4k at 60Hz or would it still be dependent on my motherboard (GIGABYTE F2A68HM-HD2).

Depends on the specific generation the connector are from.

 

Even a 780 could probably drive a 4k monitor @ 60hz, if it had the appropriate HDMI version. Afaik only hdmi2.0 supports 4k60 (and probably not even in the full colour space, but I digress)

You need at least DP 1.2 or HDMI 2.0 for 4K@60Hz.

You would not be able to use the motherboard outputs and the graphics card outputs at the same time I believe. A thing to look into is an "External video card" which is a USB out to display input. This wouldn't work for your 4k monitor, but potentially for an older, cheaper monitor.

More specifically, this is my current build:

 

Motherboard: Gigabyte FM2 F2A68HM-HD2

RAM: 8gb DDR3 1600mhz ( Single Stick ) x 2

CPU: AMD FM2 6600K ( GFX 4.2Ghz ) 

Only integrated graphics.

 

 

The graphics card I'm looking at is SAPPHIRE NITRO+ Radeon™ RX 460 4 GB.

 

It has both HDMI 2.0 and DP 1.2.

 

 

Would it work with my current build or would I have to upgrade my CPU to an FM2+ also?
