New Gaming Rig/Workstation

Go to solution Solved by PCGeek,

Here are my recommendations:

  • Spend the extra and go for a Broadwell-E 6950K.
  • For the motherboard I would recommend the X99-A II or the EVGA Classified since it's got a no frills feature set. If you want to spend more then it all depends on your needs (i.e. WiFi, RGB lighting, bling, etc.)  Try to justify the needs before spending more on an expensive board.  As long as it's a Tier 1 manufacturer like Asus, EVGA, Gigabyte, or MSI then it should be good.
  • Dominator Platinums are nice looking but there isn't a huge performance benefit.  Stick to a good reputable manufacturer at a DDR4-2400 or higher bandwidth.  Also don't to go too crazy on memory bandwidth.  Try to go for more memory than fewer faster memory modules since you won't see a huge benefit with faster RAM.

The rest of the components look good.

Hello all,

I am in the US revising a parts list for a new high quality gaming PC/video editing workstation.  I am in need of a new setup for my sister, whose only gaming solution at the moment is a Macbook Pro.  I was wondering if my components and peripherals are on track for what I plan on using them for.  I plan on running a dual monitor setup (1-1680x1050, 2-1440x900), eventually purchasing a 4k display, but not immediately.

Budget - $3500 USD (willing to go over if needed)

Components (priced from newegg as of 28 December, 2016)

$579.99         - Intel Core i7 5930k  https://goo.gl/Fcplqp
$334.99         - Asus ROG Strix X99 https://goo.gl/uXtNPk

$139.99         - Corsair Dominator Platinum 16GB (2 x 8GB sticks) https://goo.gl/ab1mfi
$669.99         - MSI Geforce GTX 1080 8GB https://goo.gl/03vZKZ
$105.99 (2x)  - WD Red 3TB Hard Drive (2x in RAID 1) https://goo.gl/nbXHai
$699.99         - Samsung 850 EVO 2TB https://goo.gl/JxI0pC
$19.99           - Asus Black SATA 24x DVDRW https://goo.gl/vhYaNc
$169.99         - Cooler Master V Series V850 https://goo.gl/rpt1fw
$34.99           - Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO CPU Cooler https://goo.gl/wNZOPP

$249.99         - Cooler Master Master Case Maker 5t https://goo.gl/syotIo

$99.99           - Windows 10 Home https://goo.gl/1VPKl8

Peripherals

$122.19 - Logitech G900 https://goo.gl/BCMoqq
$109.99 - Logitech G810 https://goo.gl/yRMb6z

Total - $3338.07 USD

Advice and constructive criticism are welcome and appreciated.  Thanks!

I'd go with the EVGA 750 or 850 P2 PSU instead.

Also the Hyper 212 EVO is not quite adequate enough for an X99 processor, especially if it will ever be overclocked. Go with a beefier air cooler (look into Be Quiet, Noctua, or Cryorig), or liquid cooling (Corsair, NZXT, EKWB Predator). Note that with this case, you won't be able to use a 360mm radiator if you go liquid.

New Build (The Compromise): CPU - i7 9700K @ 5.1Ghz Mobo - ASRock Z390 Taichi | RAM - 16GB G.SKILL TridentZ RGB 3200CL14 @ 3466 14-14-14-30 1T | GPU - ASUS Strix GTX 1080 TI | Cooler - Corsair h100i Pro | SSDs - 500 GB 960 EVO + 500 GB 850 EVO + 1TB MX300 | Case - Coolermaster H500 | PSUEVGA 850 P2 | Monitor - LG 32GK850G-B 144hz 1440p | OSWindows 10 Pro.

Peripherals - Corsair K70 Lux RGB | Corsair Scimitar RGB | Audio-technica ATH M50X + Antlion Modmic 5 |

CPU/GPU history: Athlon 6000+/HD4850 > i7 2600k/GTX 580, R9 390, R9 Fury > i7 7700K/R9 Fury, 1080TI > Ryzen 1700/1080TI > i7 9700K/1080TI.

Other tech: Surface Pro 4 (i5/128GB), Lenovo Ideapad Y510P w/ Kali, OnePlus 6T (8G/128G), PS4 Slim.

@whitenerdyswag I'm using PCPartPicker to pick the parts you need. Would you consider using other sites to purchase your parts from are you only buying from Newegg? :)

While I agree that a better cooler would be beneficial the Hyper 212 Evo is a capable cooler if not performing extreme overclocking.  I use a Noctua NH-U14S with my 6800K and my idle temps are in the low 30s with just an XMP 2.0 profile.  While I personally prefer Corsair, and EVGA PSUs the Cooler Master V850 is also very highly rated from JonnyGuru.  Also none of them actually manufacture the PSUs as they are manufactured by SuperFlower, Seasonic, Delta Electronics, etc.  My Corsair HX1000i is the same as the equivalent Seasonic but with a Corsair PSU fan and Corsair Link.

Of that I'm already very aware. Thank you.
