Generally topics like this are frowned upon here at the LTT community. Devices such as the USB killers really have no practical use in the world. They would only be served in a malicious way and we do not condone that type of behavior in the community. You would be best searching for your answer elsewhere beyond the LTT community.

I would normally agree but I think it would be a cool thing to be like "hey wanna see me destroy a laptop in 2 seconds?"

ok, and what purpose would it serve? I can destroy a laptop in 2 seconds with a hammer... These types of devices honestly have no use in the world and should not even be legal in my opinion.

Do you always need to have a purpose to do something? Can't you just do it for fun?

What "fun" would you get out of shoving a stick into a PC and watch it die? I would get much more enjoyment and satisfaction out of taking a hammer to it or taking it out in the woods and use it for target practice. Besides, you already kind of tipped your hand when you said someone else's suggestion was not "discrete" enough for you.. so you obviously have a use in mind for it.

Alright, well take the hammer to it after you use the usb killer, I think it's kinda interesting/fun and it gives you a satisfaction.

Check out Adafruit.com, they have all sorts of hobby electronics parts as well as guides on how to make things with their products. You can get creative. For example, I'm slowly working on a tie using their individual Neopixels and a Gemma microcontroller.

Just don't. Period. There are more satisfying ways of destroying hardware if that is what you are truly after. Otherwise just listen to @Hackentosher and find another project to do, preferably one that involves HV so that you can satiate your thirst for electricity blowing stuff up.

Exactly, as someone who works in I.T. I totally agree. I'm glad I don't work at a school or other public sector. I can imagine somebody using this and causing tons of damage.

You can just cut the power cord from a product, strip the insulation from the mains wires, plug the power cord in a mains socket and then shove the two live wires in the usb connector .. you'll make some sparks and you may blow the fuse in the apartment and the usb will be dead.

Just as "portable" as a usb killer
