Hello LTT forum! It's that time again to upgrade my GPU, not that the 660 has been bad, but it needs to go into another build, I have $162 USD to spend shipping and sales tax included. I prefer silence under low load, as that is where the 660 falls apart to me. Any suggestions are accepted, I also may save up more and buy a 1060/480/1070 or something. Thanks!

Where do you live and where are you buying from?

Rx 460/470? Although it's better to save up for a 480 like you said. Even better a 1070.

The 460 is out, as it really isn't an upgrade over the 660 too much. If I were to save up more, I would have to be on iGPU on one of the rigs for quite a few months and that is no fun.

1050 ti is the best option at the price, but it's really best to just save up a few more bucks and get the rx 470, since the performance is so much better on it.

Save up some $20 more and get this MSI RX 470. This is definitely better than any GTX 1050Ti.

You can bark like a dog, but that won't make you a dog.

You can act like someone you're not, but that won't change who you are.

Finished Crysis without a discrete GPU,15 FPS average, and a lot of heart

How I plan my builds -

Spoiler

For me I start with the "There's no way I'm not gonna spend $1,000 on a system."

Followed by the "Wow I need to buy the OS for a $100!?"

Then "Let's start with the 'best budget GPU' and 'best budget CPU' that actually fits what I think is my budget."

Realizing my budget is a lot less, I work my way to "I think these new games will run on a cheap ass CPU."

Then end with "The new parts launching next year is probably gonna be better and faster for the same price so I'll just buy next year."

Yeah. Now which cooler @TheRandomness @DocSwag @PCGeek I want silence but don't necessarily want to overclock.

Assuming you don't live in NY, if you buy from B&H you don't have to pay shipping or tax.

Here's the cheapest one I could find there:

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1297676-REG/msi_radeon_rx_470_armor.html

It even has a $20 mail in rebate so really you end up paying $150, which turns out to be within your original budget!

EDIT: I wouldn't recommend buying from newegg since you do have to pay tax.

I haven't personally used the 1050 Ti but Kyle at Bitwit did a review on the MSI and he also included a sound test.  It seemed quiet enough for me.

Really what I want is the fan to be off while doing stuff like web browsing, which the 470 does.

Fffffff

In that case you could get the gaming x 4g model from b&h. It's $192 but it's not tax unlike newegg and you get a $25 mail in rebate instead of $20 so you end up paying $167. The rebate does end in a few days though :/.

Or you could just pre order it.

I think the 1050 Ti from MSI would do that since it's common place to only turn on fans when under load these days.  You could also adjust the fan curve.

I've pretty much decided on that MSI RX 470.

Good choice. Since the fans also stop spinning when the GPU has low usage and is below the thermal point on where the fans should start spinning. It's a pretty common feature nowadays.
