4670k vs 4690.

So I'm considering buying a used processor and I can get both a 4670k and a 4690 at the same price. And I'm not sure which one to take, I'd like to know what you guys think. And one thing, is the 4670k gonna run a lot hotter than a 4690?

4670k so you can overclock it. And yes, it will run hotter. Do you have a Z97 motherboard?

GTX 960, Don't have a mobo yet. Some 8gb ddr3 kit and I do have a hyper 212 evo that I can use.

If it runs much hotter you can always delid the CPU to get better thermal performance

Okay thanks. I guess thermals aren't everything. In the end I just want it to run better than my 8120.

Considering that most boards go for $100 or more, I would consider going to Skylake unless you already have an LGA1150 board. If you do, my vote goes to the 4690.

I don't remember exactly how much hotter Haswell vanilla is than Haswell refresh, but I dont think it's anythinga good cooler won't solve. There are lots of good quiet coolers out there.

As I live in Iceland skylake chips are quite expensive and importing them isn't much cheaper. Buying a second hand processor is a much better option imo.

I see. In that case, I would try two builds. One with a Z97 and the 4670K and the other and seeing which cost gives better performance.

I don't mean buying them, but parting them out and checking which build gives you the most frames per dollar in the games you'll play.
