Hello everyone and merry Christmas.

My friend is a 3D modeling animator, and recently released a new video on her YouTube channel. However, something weird happened :

As you can see in the screenshots below, there is a lot of noise in dark environment even though she 3D modeled everything in 1080p.

I think it might have something to do with bitrate but I'm not entirely sure since the video on her computer looked just fine.

Also, it didn't seem to happen in her last video, even though it was 720p.

Did YouTube compression screw her up?

The first 2 are from her last video and the last two are from the previous one.

this is why linus uploads in 4k, and is messing with stuff like floatplane club.

youtube isnt meant as a platform for high visual fidelity professional content, and their bitrates are to match...

But why did it happen with only one of two videos?

Yeah... I'm afraid rendering time would be too long if she were to 3D model in 4k

my guess would be that the encoder just went derp on the specific scene.

Thx Google

well, she can render in 1080p, and then just literally scale up 2x to 4k, and upload that.

in that way you'd essentially have 1080p video, but with 4k youtube bitrate.

I see.. I didn't know that. Well, now it's too late to change, but at least we know for the next time. Thanks.

Dark scenes with lots of close greys are the worst for compression algorythms and you get those "blocks" because all those greys get encoded as the same colour.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

So your advice would be avoiding dark environments as long as she's doing stuff on YouTube?

It depends, if dark environments are what she wants to make I wouldn't step away from them just because of the compression. Just be aware that yt struggles with that sort of thing (it's not just dark backgrounds, snow and very light backgrounds also mess up the algorythm).

Basically everything that is only one color, or near the same color?

Yes, and small things that are across the screen like snow flakes.

Okay, thanks.

Also, since she's probably going to upgrade, would you recommend a 6700, a 6700k (only 30€ more), or should she step up into the x99 game?

It depends on the programs she uses and her budget but generally with 3d rendering more cores are better. If she's going to go for a 6700 I think she should get the k though (assuming she's willing to oc).

Autodesk Maya. I know that the more cores, the better, but will she really benefit spending more for a x99 and let's say a 6800k in term of price to performance?

In France from Amazon an x99 and a 6800k would be about the same as a Z170 + 6700k + 16GB of ram + another 100€

It's up to her to say that, while the performance gain is probably not proprtional to the price increase at the same time you can't get that performance in any other way at the moment.
