I have a Noctua nh-d14 on my 3570k, I absolutely love this thing. I am just wondering the best way to thoroughly clean it. I have used an air compressor and a paint brush to try loosen the fine material, and that got the majority of it. I am mostly wondering if it is safe to put this sort of metal in hot water. It is purely cosmetic, and I am not expecting the tiny amount of dust to be affecting temperatures, but i would like to get it cleaner. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The main heatsync and heatpipes are aluminum and copper so I wouldn't see any issue with putting it in water, I'd personally take all the mounting hardware (little spring and screw at base) and fans off obviously before you do though. Also to avoid any water stains I would use your air compressor to blow all the water off after washing it. Then clean the surface that touches the cpu ihs with 95+% isopropyl alcohol after the unit has been dried.

I washed my Hyper 212 EVO in water and blow-dried it on hot. It is fine.

Thank you guys for the quick replies. I kind of thought that it wouldn't be an issue, but i didn't want to risk ruining the finish, or worse causing rust to start. Much appreciated!

Dpending on your local water supply, the water can contain a significant amount of minerals. Blowing the water off with the paint gun would be good, but I wouldn't use a hairblower. That will just vaporize the water on the cooler, maybe leaving watermarks.

If you are really into it, you can soak the thing in destilled water after cleaning it to prevent any watermarks.
