Hi I recently got an NVIDIA Gtx 1080 and games still aren't running so smooth, I know it's nothing to do with my GPU so I do believe my CPU is bottle necking the GPU. My current CPU is an Intel Core i5 3330 running at 3.00GHz. I am puzzled and what CPU I should be upgrading to I probably have £400 to spend max (aprox. $500). Anyway if anyone can help me come to a decision it would be greatly appreciated, cheers!

Are you including the motherboard and RAM as well in this budget?

I have 8gb of RAM already and yes MB included, although I could go a little bit over for it, my current one has an LGA1155 socket which only supports 2nd and 3rd gen intel CPUs

If you are going to upgrade your CPU you will have to upgrade your RAM as well... The newer platforms use DDR4...

With a GTX 1080 it is preferable to buy an i7.

This is the best you can get for ~400 pounds

If you go for a 6xxx cpu bare in mind you'll also need to upgrade your ram to DDR4.

Idk if you have an aftermarket cooler, but if not this would go over budget.
Also, you can get an unlocked skylake I5 (6600k) as well as cooler, motherboard and ram, or this I7 and motherboard by saving money not getting new ram.

May as well use a standard 6700 as that motherboard is B150.

That's what I was thinking, although the 6700k does come with higher base clocks, to be fair.

Is there no need for new ram then so I could stick with my current 8.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 at 665MHz

Well, the 6700K is clocked 600MHz higher, so it is worth it IMO

665MHz is very low... You should get 1600MHz RAM....

Agreed. I know its common knowledge that ram clocks doesn't affect performance much but this may be the exception

RAM clocks don't affect performance. But, all of the tests that I can find, show that from 1333MHz+ there isn't much difference.

(as the lowest speed tested is 1333MHz)

Looking at benchmarks, although I can't find any involving a 1080, it appears that the difference in frame rate between these two CPUs is only marginal with the 6700 coming out on top only by a few frames and for £50 extra it doesn't seem like it would be worth getting an extra 4 fps or so for that price, given that I will also have to buy ram now as well. I'll have a look now for some benchmarks with 1080 cards.

Get an i7 at least... An i5 will bottleneck it in pretty much all CPU intensive games
