CD-R is Compact Disc Recordable, a write once recordable compact disc.

CD-RW Is Compact Disc ReWritable, a recordable compact disc format that could be written to multiple times.

DVD-R and DVD+R were competing standards for recordable DVDs.  +R came later and was technically superior but not in a way that would matter to most.  The W versions are again ReWritable flavors of each.

DVD-RAM is DVD Random Access Memory, which could be randomly accessed more akin to a hard drive or zip drive, oven transparently by the operating system, unlike Recordable and ReWritable formats which were written in a more specific procedure.  DVD-RAMs use was seen more in camcorders and PVRs rather than desktop PCs.

Thanks for the help, looks like I can write more than once rather than having to do everything at once with a CD with rw and the drive itself if it has it

Yes, though CDRW writing is slower than CDR writing and compatibility with lesser drives such as audio CD players, game consoles, and older model CDROM drives is greatly reduced.  CDR demonstrates greater compatibility.

We'll I have noticed everyone says that if you don't have something that says CD ROM it will not read or write discs and if it has CD rw and CD r it will be able to read discs
