When to replace PSU?

MrAlbertrocks

When is the right time to upgrade a power supply? What are the signs of a failing PSU? I've always been scared of a PSU failing a damaging other components on my PC.

And, i have a really high end system, but i use a Supernova B2 PSU, which is bronze, is there any reason to upgrade to a Gold one?.

Reasons to upgrade:

1. You are getting a new, more power hungry graphics card.

2. Your PSU is too old already.

3. You are adding more components to your system (more HDDs, Lighting system, watercooling, etc)

4. You want a lower electric bill ( getting a gold or platinum psu would save around 30% more electicity).

No reason to upgrade due to efficiency. Efficiency doesn't really correlate to quality.

The B2 will outlive the useful life of your system, don't worry about it.

The difference between Gold and Bronze is marginally better power efficiency, which isn't all that useful unless you are running over 9000 PCs at once.

The % differences between a bronze and gold psu-s are about 5%, and 6-8% for platinum

Well, it really depends on usage, but it is clearly more than 10%

also, better efficiency = less heat = less degradation
