rx 460 running slow

DigitalFlower

hi! so i recently got an rx 460 to replace a damaged hd 5670, and things seem to be woking ok-ish so far, i have a few issues with my 2 monitors but nothing too annoying to be bothered with, anyway, among the few games i play is rise of the tomb raider, and i see benchmarks showing the game running at very high settings at 49~ fps at 1080p and when running the benchmark, i get way less than that, between 30 and 40 the 7 times i ran the benchmark, to get similar results to the online reslts, i have to set it to medium, which give me 52 fps and well, that's fine, i don't mind that much, but it still bothers me, like what might be going wrong? do you have any ideas? attached system config picture.

thank you!

Well there are  three problems here

1) update your GPU and CPU drivers

2) Your CPU is a potatoe to slow, not enough cores and not enough MHZ

3) The RX460 is a very low end and slow card so i think you might have just got a lower binned card (some are better then others)

hi! i am using the most recent drivers, and yes, i know, but it was a good harvest! i can't afford to upgrade my cpu right now, i might have gotten a bad chip? probably, the card was on amazon for 80 usd and 20 usd MIR so i ended up paying only 60 usd with free shipping so i  guess i can't complain that much :/ anyway, it would have been nice to have it run the same as the reviewers'

who knows.

Benchmarkers use top of the line CPU's and other parts to benchmark GPU's. Your cpu is clearly a bottleneck here.

hi! but wouldn't a bottlenecked gpu be capped below 100% usage when running intense graphics workloads?  i have seen it reach 100% when using it to render scenes in blender and playing rise of the tomb raider, the cpu sue goes from 80 to 100% when running tomb raider and 100% when rendering in blender (using gpu as compute device) so i know in blender something is definitely capping the gpu, again, i might not completely understand how cpus bottleneck gpus.

thank you!

another odd thing! running league of legends at highest settings, i am getting 150 fps( i was getting the same with my old 5670 at high settings) with 50% cpu use and 35% gpu use! a friend of mine has an i7 920 and a gtx 750ti and his game runs at 250 fps, is my cpu really that bad that it bottlenecks a low end gpu playing a not that demanding game?  any input is very much apreciated :/ i might be able to save 40 or 50 usd, sell my pc and get a slightly better one, i used to think my pc was not that bad but now i don't feel the same.

thank you

Did you install all of your drivers correctly? Including the chipset from Intel or your board-maker?

hi! yes, i even put in a spare hdd and performed a clean windows install+ drivers + the games to test if it could have been software.

also, i do't have an intel chipset, if you see my original post, you'll see my pc specs.

thank you!

Sorry about that. Are you installing the 9-series chipset from the board-maker or AMD?

hi, don't worry, i apreciate you're trying to help! i have the 8 series chipset driver installed and i went and overclocked the cpu an extra 300 mhz for a core clock of 3.7 ghz, and still getting the same results, seems like i need more threads :/

That or the HDD is limiting your performance when cycling through textures when playing.

ooooh, silly me didn't consider the hdd, tomorrow i'll borrow my sister's ssd and clean instal then try again, if it is still slowing things down in games, the overclock still helped me save a couple of seconds of render time with cpu in blender which s my main use of this old potato xD

thank you! ARikozuM!

Make sure to check the SMART data for those HDD's. Seeing that triangle next to the first drive means an alert should go off.

hi yes, that disk with a warning is from my even older potato pc, i have backed up the important information from that disk to an external disk, i use it to store non essentials like adobe reader, office, winrar, programs i know if anything happens to that drive i can easily replace, the main one is the 2 tb one and that is working ok, no warnings or errors or bad sectors acording to the smart data.

thank you!
