Moar SSD Storage Options

What 256 (Around) would you suggest?

Either whatever Samsung's latest EVO offering is or a Crucial MX### series SSD. Both are top quality for dollar, but I am a little biased toward Crucial since they aren't overpriced like certain SSD brands. ahem Intel cough cough. To be fair, if you're buying an NVMe or PCIe based SSD, then it makes sense that the cost goes up, but Intel charges way too much for SATA based SSDs IMO.

Plus, Crucial is owned by Micron, the same company manufacturing around 45% of the world's Flash NAND. When someone like Kingston or ADATA manufacture an SSD or RAM, they're just taking Micron, Hynix, or Samsung made NAND chips and slapping their name on the item, then figuring out how much money they can make off it. Buying from Crucial is the closest thing you'll get to buying an SSD directly from the factory.

Crucial MX300 275GB - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IAGSD5O/

Crucial MX200 250GB - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RQA6DTE/

The MX200 drives are technically faster since they're not using 3D stacked VNAND, but that's also why they have a little less capacity for the money as well. Either model would work, it just depends on what your needs are - more storage or more speed. Also, at this point, it's up to you whether you buy a ~250GB drive or just jump right to a ~500GB since the price has come down A LOT in the last year.

I currently have a Samsung 850 EVO 128gb with 28gb OP. I have found that 100gb is not enough. Its been about a year since a got it. So now, im stuck with little space, and little budget, but this is important.

So, I have a few options I can think of. Get another identical drive and raid 0, for that I would also need a rain card i think but I know little about raid. Or I could just get a newer larger SSD, in that case what SSD should I get and what could I do with the old SSD?

What other choices do I have?

SSD's aren't even that expensive anymore. I find a 250GB SSD is enough for OS and a few programs.

Nothing. You continue to use it like normal. You start adding new stuff to the larger drive. If you need space on the 128GB, you can move stuff to the larger drive too.

I have a larger 1tb HDD that I have moved everything I can too. Everything on my SSD is windows, Firefox, and installer files. Windows literally uses 50% of my space.

Well here's the thing.

Moving over to a new drive would require reinstalling Windows (I would say cloning, but I'm the only one who's okay with it. Everyone else will say reinstall Windows) So if you want to spend a day reinstalling Windows, there's that. You can either pawn off the drive or keep it around either to dump things into or use as a scratch disk if you use Photoshop or something.

If you leave your setup as is, you don't have to reinstall Windows, you simply install future programs to the SSD and if you need to, reinstall current programs to the new SSD. Or you can move it and replace the original folder with a symlink.

I just don't wan't to deal with all the settings and maintence. I will clone the drive if I get a new ssd, I just don't have the budget to get a new ssd and waste my current one. What's a scratch drive?

How do you set that up? Could I create a symlink for %appdata%?

You can do that or you can save your project folders for programs that generate that kind of thing onto the other SSD.

Use it as a scratch disk as @M.Yurizaki suggested, sell it, or upgrade another PC in your house that doesn't have a boot SSD yet.

My first SSD was an Intel 330 series 180GB which is now in my parents computer since I upgraded to a 240GB (maybe 250?) Samsung SSD.

I don't yet feel the need to have any more space than ~250GB for Windows and my installed applications, including %appdata% and Adobe CC apps.

All of my games and personal data are stored on either my 500GB SSD software RAID0/1 array, or my 3TB software RAID0/1 array.

Hardware RAID is also an option, but I'm strongly against it unless you run backups daily, since RAID is not a backup.

Also, when you configure Adobe CC apps, there are settings to change where the scratch disk is located so you don't fill up your Windows drive.

Desktop: KiRaShi-Intel-2022 (i5-12600K, 5060 Ti) Mobile: Moto Razr 50 Ultra (Razr+ 2024) | 30GB CAN+US+MEX $30/month
Laptop: Lenovo Yoga 7i (16") 82UF0015US (i7-12700H, 16GB/2TB RAM/SSD, A370M GPU) Tablet: Lenovo Tab Plus (256GB)
Camera: Canon M6 Mark II | Canon Rebel T1i (500D) | Canon SX280 Music: Spotify Premium (CIRCA '08)
