WD confusion?

We all know there is a variety of WD drives, like blue, black, green,..., right. We also get these explanations to it, but what do you actually recommend? For everyday gaming, editing,... 1/3 of day the PC is turned on.

The Blue if you only want to buy from WD. Any 1TB drive really would do.

Do you think there's some difference in Blue and Black? And more like 2-4TB?

Bought a Red series. Meant for continous operation. NAS drive i believe they call it.. That said.. there is some statistics out there on drive failure rates. Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) Manufacturers also have claims on MBTF

Not any that's worth the difference. And if 2TB, still, the Blue (Caviar Blue mind you) if you only want to buy from WD.

*cough cough* there are two variants of the 1TB blue...a 5400rpm one (relabelled green) and a 7200rpm (the original blue we all love) one, also the 1TB+ drives are relabelled greens which are all 5400rpm drives and brings everybody's hate on em with them as apparently they weren't reliable?

Also, I think blue is good enough. If you don't care about speeds, get them slower ones if they are moar reliable.

Blue drive: standard drive, fairly reliable only slower than balck (not by much)

Black drive: Essentially a faster blue drive, often loud, expensive and not worth it imo

Red Drive: Very reliable drive meant for raid setups, often fairly slow by comparison but still worth it imo

Green: A slower blue drive (these suck imo)

Purple: Used for surveillance cameras mostly never buy them for PCs

 

Get 7200rpm for blue drives fyi

Assuming it's a 7200rpm drive (so all the drives that are sub 1TB, including the most popular 7200rpm 1TB blue)  

 

5400rpm 1TB-4TB(?) blues are relabelled greens ya know  (unless they've finally phased in their purposed new naming scheme for the blues and greens).

Well I assumed they were still selling the 7200rpm caviar blues, I heard something about the green line replacing the blues but the HDD I had in mind isn't that, Greens are trash

Personaly, I would not dare putting data on an WB drive. A long time ago (IDE era) I had some big data losses with +/- 3 months old WD drives... But that's my personal experiance.

They are, just need to make sure you're buying a 7200rpm blue...not a 5400rpm

It really depends on your real usage. 

 

First off, if you want 7200 RPMs and want larger than 1TB, you MUST get a Black drive. Blue drives are only 1TB @ 7200, anything larger and it turns into a 5400/5900. This has been stated before, but I wanted to re-iterate.

 

If you are running many critical things from the drive and not an SSD, get a 1TB Blue (7200 RPMs) or, 2TB and larger Black.

If you don't care much about performance and you need extra space, you can get a Blue 2TB+

 

 

No matter your situation, BACK UP YOUR STUFF. No drive is perfect.
