lga 2011 boards are expensize though, I would suggest going for a lga 1150 board, and something like a i5 4460, or 4690, if you are going for the "k" veraio s, or an i7 ddr4 is cheap worth it just to go to skylake.

building first system, using end of life parts, unless you got the ram free you're doing it wrong. Might be worth spending the extra $50 to get ddr4 ram as last time I checked 4 year old intel stuff costs about the same as this years intel stuff like everything in between

What is your budget for the cpu/motherboard?

You could just put the ddr3 memory on eBay with a 10-20% discount and it would be sold in a few days.

If you insist on using those memory sticks, socket AM3+ motherboards and AMD FX processors are quite cheap these days, and often discounted, because from January there's going to be socket AM4 and the new Zen processors.

A good six core or 8 core FX cpu and a motherboard based on 970 + SB950 chipset will be just fine.  You just won't have "luxuries" like m.2 connectors or usb 3.* connectors.

Sell the ram and build on skylake, it's not worth saving $30-$50 now and being multiple years behind.

Newegg has Asus M5A97 R2.0 motherboard for 70$ , $60 after 10 bucks rebate card (30% off before rebate card): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131873&ignorebbr=1

AMD FX-6300 (six core, 3.5 ghz - 4.1 ghz) can be bought for 100$ : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113286

It's a decent base system, and something that won't really limit a powerful video card. Could save some money here and put the difference into a more powerful video card.

For that price you can get an i3 or an 8350 with a wraith cooler and motherboard at microcenter, pretty terrible deal.

I'm not American, so I don't know what motherboard they'd bundle with the 8350 ... may be or may not be as good deal as you say, won't contradict you.

It's important to realize that together motherboard and cpu would be cheaper than just one 4690k or something like that, which would pretty much the same performance in games. So as long as he already has DDR3 memory and doesn't care about m.2 and other stuff, it could be a good deal.
