Upgrading my PSU

Hey guys,

My Energon EPS-1000W  PSU has started making these weird buzzing/vibrating noises when I turn on my PC and it freaks me out!

I don't even know how many years I've had it, probably 4-5. So, it's time to upgrade and I can't really decide on what to choose.

My current rig is:

i7 4790

20GB ram

GTX 970

2x BenQ HD monitors

1x Samsung 4k monitor

My goal is to upgrade to a 1080 card in 2017 but until then, I'm stuck with my 970.

What PSU would you guy's recommend? I can't seem to find anything with the pins I need ;)

For a 1080 an EVGA GQ/GS/G2/B2/G3, 550W or higher is fine. A Seasonic G-series, Corsair RMx, Antec HCG and Cooler Master V-series should all work as well.

Are you sure it isn't just the fan acting up? You might want to investigate that, and just replace the fan inside your PSU. (you have PSU questions, not CPU questions as in your title...)

Hey stoner,

Thanks for pointing out the title, I seem to have a fart stuck in brain.

It could very well be the fan. After about 10 minutes the weird noises stops.

But the PSU is very old and honestly, I don't trust it anymore.

I cant seem to find much about that PSU, seems dodgy to me, defiantly worth replacing. Whats your budget? A 550W G2/G3 or RMx would be great, otherwise something from Seasonic(these are more high end though).

I've had an PSU, no brand, running for 10 years non stop. (500 watt) Got rid of it/gave it to my GF, and she still uses it without any issues. If it's just the fan, and if that noise is the only bad thing about it, replacing the fan is fine. You could use it for another 5 years.

But if you want to swap it for something new, it's your choice.

There's a Danish forum talking about it in 2010 where they say it's bad. It even has 1 star on another danish site for pc equipment.

But the budget doesn't really matter. I just wan't something that lasts and works.

I've been looking at a Corsair VS650 650W but I don't think it has the Pins required for either GTX 970 or 1080?

I wouldn't get a VS for a 1080, too much risk. Its enough wattage, but the VS series is poor quality and not a good idea to pair with high end components. Also, just dont buy a 970 new, its really bad value now.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.
