Hello everyone

Thanks for taking the time to read my first post, I hope you can help me with my first build.

1. Budget & Location:

I'm in the United States with a budget from $1500 to $1800, might be able to go a little bit higher if upgrades are worth it.

2. Aim

I'm a musician that loves to game, I'm into heavy audio editing but I would also like to be able to play current games at high settings, as well as a PC that can be upgraded in the future.

3. Monitors

I plan on running one monitor, I still don't have any on mind so I would like to hear your thoughts about which one to get, hopefully I want a 27 inch monitor so I can run games in 2k.  Also I would not count the monitor into the budget, because that is a separate entity.

4. Peripherals

When it comes to mice and keyboards, i'm open to suggestions, I don't need anything fancy just something that works and is reliable, but I would not count them into the budget as the main parts are the most important to me.

5. Why are you upgrading?

I'm moving away from my 5 year old laptop that served me well back in the day, but now with the new requirements and needs, it's starting to show its age and I really could use the change.

I started investigating and doing some lists to have a better picture of the performance/price ratio.

Here is the one I currently have.

Made with PCPartPicker.

CPU:  Intel Core i7-6700 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor

Motherboard: Not sure about the Motherboard because I want one that has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capabilities

Case: I'm open to suggestions as well because I don't have any experience with cases.

Ram:  Kingston FURY 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2666 Memory

Storage: Crucial MX300 525GB 2.5" Solid State Drive

Seagate 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Hybrid Internal Hard Drive

GPU:  Asus GeForce GTX 1080 8GB STRIX Video Card

PSU: Corsair CXM 650W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply

Extras:  LG WH14NS40 Blu-Ray/DVD/CD Writer

I would appreciate any input you can give me, thank you very much everyone.

I'm looking at building another pc myself and have been researching parts for the last few months. One thing I would ask you, is do you want to be able to overclock or are you happy at stock clock speeds? If you want to overclock I have some suggestions.

i would't go with an i7 if you don't want to oc, go with xeons, also, do you want an audio card? since you'll be editing/mixing audio - bluetooth and wifi capable mobos are very expensive too

Hello Madbull, thanks for taking the time to answer.

I'm hesitant to go the overclocking route because I don't really know how to do it and I am afraid to screw up.
Although i'm aware of the benefits of it.

Still I would like to read your suggestions.

Thanks!

Thanks for answering gtx1060!

I'm running my audio through an external interface, so I don't need the audio card.

With that, I would reccomend an i5 or something cheaper. No need to spend the money on an i7 6700 if you aren't going to get the 6700k overclocking version. The i5 6600k is cheaper by almost $100 and will allow you to overclock later if you decide. Or just the 6600 is fine. For gaming, the hyperthreading of the i7 doesn't help all that much. MAYBE a couple FPS in most games.

I am also partial to tier 1 power supplies. I have heard that the cx m line isn't the greatest. I personally am going with the evga supernova G2 650W. It's 89 on newegg, fully modular, 80 plus gold certified and tier 1 rated.

As he said he doesn't overclock. And why downgrade to a 1070? He has 1080.

As for a case, I am very partial to the masterbox 5 by cooler Master along with the corsair carbide 400c. They both are great for expandability and features for the price and both mid tower cases.

Madbull:

Thanks, I'll check them out!

You never know, always better to have the option to OC (it is very easy to do and I definitely suggest going for it).

Hello Matu20, Thanks for answering!

I was looking at the Zotac card too, but still can't decide.

Well I guess I could learn how to overclock.
I am willing to learn.

even if you don't oc the 6700k has higher clock speed than 6700 so it will still faster

Also on the OS. if you go windows, look into retail vs OEM. the oem can only be used once and ties itself to your mobo. So if you want to upgrade later to a new mobo or computer entirely you will have to purchase it again unless you can talk MS into moving it for you.
