Hi,

My brother's old laptop recently broke and being the lovely person that I am, I gave him mine. I tried to fix his and have ended up with an odd issue.

Sometimes it refuses to boot - nothing happens at all, as if the power switch wasn't plugged in.

Sometimes, usually waiting a day or so after it failing, it works absolutely fine, no issues, no error messages.

Tried using one stick of RAM, replacing thermal paste and just rebuilding and cleaning everything - same issue. Would replacing the CMOS battery help?

For reference it's a Dell Inspiron 15-3521 and it's also worth noting that it's not imperative that I get it to work, this is more a "why not?" kind of thing ^_^

And do tell me if there's anything I missed and need to add.

Maybe the cable from the power button to the mobo is damaged?

Hadn't thought of that, don't think that it would be due to the fact that it works sometimes, but I'll test it out

Whether it's plugged in or not doesn't affect the particular issue i'm having. Sometimes it boots, sometimes it doesn't, as far as I can tell it works just as well plugged in and not.

Currently it's on, but at this time yesterday I was pressing the power button to no effect
