I was planning on upgrading my current "gaming" headset to one with better audio quality and possibly a ModMic. I have a budget of about 160 and I could stretch it to 175 if needed. I was currently thinking of getting an audio-technica ATH-AD700X with the ModMic 4.0 omni-direction w/ mute. Would there be any configuration that is better for roughly the same amount of money? Also, does the Sennheiser HD 598 SE offer enough of an improvement to justify the price increase? Thanks in advance for any help you can offer

The ATH-AD700X is good for gaming due to the large soundstage. Not going to deliver earth shattering bass, but otherwise it is good.

that is my primary purpose, I play overwatch and my current headphones have too much bass. Do you have any suggestion for other headphones that might perform better?

okay, thanks for the response

Why not get the 900x?

Definitely can second the ATH A series though. It's fantastic!

Is it actually better, though? A la 558/598 shenanigans.

I couldn't tell you. I haven't listened to either. Maybe in the new year, I'll make an effort to look at some of the budget ones. I've only listened to the A1000Z and the A2000X.

I read a comparison that there isnt much difference other than an improvement of some of the 700's flaws. so I think I will save a couple bucks and just get the 700X, unless a good deal strikes within the next week.

While you decide, go to the manf site for your audio chipset and download their full drive suite and use the equalizer to remove the bass...... Or try the built in EQ for Windows. Easy fix. You're welcome.

I have watched many, many reviews on YT about headsets that range from $150.00 USD to $10,000 over on UnBox Therapy. I know that the ppl here will burn me at the stake for saying this, but, I have a pair of Turtle Beach Stealth 500P that were brand new, factory sealed, only cost me $35..............and they sound AMAZING, plus they work on everything I have, console, laptop, Tower, even my mobile....and it's a Windows Phone. Forget about price, looks, reviews, opinions....here's what you do: Go buy 2-3 headsets you are really interested in, take them home...try them out for a week, take back the two you don't want, and keep the pair that sound best TO YOU. B/c you can ask for opinions all day, friend. But only YOU know what your ears sound like.

Think about it.

Well at $35, i wouldn't complain at all, damn that's cheap :D

People ask recommendations here to satisfy the human nature before purchasing something that is pre-purchase research. Even after the purchase that person will ask around to satisfy their post-purchase behavior to justify their actions lol, some even are happy with their purchase but after post-purchase research their opinions are altered to have a different opinion and dislike their current purchase and search for something new... That's in the human nature i guess :D

Regarding purchasing and returning them back, i doubt all of us have that option, cos in my country there are no returns or refunds allowed :(

The price-point sweet spot for the AD-series is the 700x.  The 500x shares the same sound signature but the sound is splashy, and separation is not very good. The 900x on the other hand is too similar to the 700x to recommend it over, they still suffer from a diffuse soundstage though it is quite wide.  Hence I'd say the 700x is the best value for money when it comes to gaming.

The 1000x is the next best step up from the 700x, but because of it's non-angled drivers, more intimate soundstage, and punchier upper bass it's more suited to music than it is to games.
