On AMD VEGA

At the New Horizon event, we saw a Vega GPU beat the GTX 1080 in Doom @ 4K. I want there to be a slightly cut-down part that performs more in between the GTX 1070 and 1080 as well, because frankly, I don't need that much performance when I build a full-blown Zen/Vega computer. I'll be getting either a 1080p@144Hz or 1440p@60Hz monitor to go with this build, (currently I'm rocking a 900p@60Hz monitor with my placeholder system.)

Will there be a more practical 1440p60/1080p144 Vega GPU?

Possibly, I guess we will have to just wait and see. I wouldn't be surprised if they released more however, it seems a little odd to release only one card per generation, if Vega counts as a new gen.

Welcome to Maryland.

Well, the 1080 isn't exactly capable of 4K60 at high settings in that many games. It'd make for a better 1440p card as games continue to demand more from the GPU. With Vega beating the 1080 in a single benchmark, it kind of paints itself filling the same sort of role.

The GTX 1070 is also a competent 1440p card, and the GTX 1060 struggles a little in some games but is still competent. But yeah, 4K isn't something I plan on going for straight away.

Yes, the 1070 is very competent with 1440p in today's games, but it will only last so long before compromises have to be made to keep 1440p60. The same is true for the 1080, but it will take a bit longer for that to happen.

Very true. I'm considering 1080p144Hz as well, and maybe that will be easier to attain.

I'm just saying, if what AMD demonstrated is the lowest end Vega, it just means more time before an upgrade is necessary.

Yeah, but it also feels like overkill for what I want by then. Hasn't Linus argued that "future-proofing" is not a great idea?

Linus argued it, same for JayzTwoCents and a dozen other YouTubers.

And every single one of them are wrong. They don't realistically consider that many use cases, or the situations users might be in. They only live in the here and now, and never the there and then.

There are still people running cards that were top of the line 3-5 years ago, and are still relevant today because they still meet the wants and expectations of their users, without the users lowering their standards.

In contrast, Jay swapped 3 Titan XM's for 2 1080's, and then the 2 1080's for 2 Titan XP's. Linus is reviewing enough product that he isn't stuck using a system for that long.

Still, is it not true that overspending now isn't the best idea because of how fast tech improves?

It's more cost effective to buy a part that costs 30% more and can last 50% longer.

And for us consumers, we don't see the fruits of half of these improvements as tangible performance, longevity, or capacity, and the other half, aren't worth hemorrhaging money for ever generation or every other generation.

and I agree more with Linus that you should spend based on what you want, performance-wise, right now, and make upgrades based on the performance you need in the future.
