Usually. Sometimes its soldered on, but usually its just SODIMMS. Most of the time, i it can be upgraded you will only have to unscrew 1-2 screws on the bottom and a little access panel removes.

also make sure its the correct type e.g. ddr3 L

Depends on the laptop

Also when checking for compatibility:

ex. 
capacity, ddr3, speed, cas latency, voltage
4GB DDR3-1600 PC3-12800 CL11 1.5V

4GB DDR3L-1600 PC3-12800 CL11 1.35V

 

i would say speed and voltage is probably the most important followed by cas latency
