Doing my first full build. Intended use is a compact dev machine, and occasional gaming.

The parts so far:

Have not decided on the power supply yet, as I'm not sure which one to get so it fits the case.

Any suggestions?

Why z170 motherboard on a non K cpu?

Case fits all ATX PSU so any would do

Personally: CXM or S12II 620B for 49.99

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/nB3RsY/seasonic-power-supply-s12ii620bronze

Also the GPU you picked is longer than the case can support.

You need something smaller. EVGA mini or Zotac mini or Gigabyte Mini is one of them

-Don't need a z170 board for a locked cpu

-Maybe get a larger SSD? Personal preference, but I would find myself using 500GB pretty quickly

-That gpu won't fit in the case

-Any ATX sized psu will fit.

Got it. Do yourself a favour and get a 6GB 1060. The UV400 isn't great, switch it to something great. Chose a PSU. Jesus don't spend that much on a motherboard!

I realise the motherboard is bit of an overkill, but if I want bluetooth I dont have many options - there's no slot for an additional networking card.

500gb is sufficient for me as I dont hoard data, and use cloud and external storage.

Didnt notice the gpu size, I'll get the mini

The build above from @Energycore has everything you need, even wifi

for dev build have a look how the cpu you want measures at linux kernel compile times. waiting for a project to build is a real pain. the i5 you selected is beaten by amd-fx.

I updated the list, accounting for suggestions.

Had not considered amd before. I do not do much multi thread oriented work, so more cores does not give a lot of benefit. Amd does better in virtualisation, so it is worth to consider anyhow.

AMD: current sockets will not be used in the next cpu and i dont even know if there are itx boards on the market for them. It is a very cheap way to get 8 cores and the are unlocked.

Ideally you want a i7. even the older i7 compile a kernel faster than the 6500

Looking at the compiler times and since you won't game every day, this is the build to get.

Since you wanna pay $150 for an SSD, do yourself a favour and get the 750GB one from Crucial. It's margin of error away from the 850 EVO.

i dont know if you need 16GB of RAM. You might save $40 or get a better SSD. Iv had 16G for the last five years and Iv only needed 8GB. I have 8GB in my laptop and I have almost zero pagefaults

@SCHISCHKA For games? No I do not need 16gb. For virtual machines? It should be enough. Also, "almost zero pagefaults". I do peak at around 70% memory usage with 16gb on my laptop.

@Energycore ddr3? When I need to upgrade the memory, it might be expensive to get 32 gb kit of 2 sticks.

The recommended SeaSonic S12II 620W 80+ Bronze is not available in my region (International shipping? No thank you.) So I added the 520w model on the list.

This is 2133Mhz DDR3. It's just as fast as your run of the mill DDR4. More importantly, the reason why that's the build to get is that this Xeon is a Hyperthreaded Quad core, similar to an i7-4790, and costs just $240. It will cut your compiler times by a bunch.

I don't see a reason to need 32GB for development, but if you do need 32GB, mini-ITX is not the way to go either way.
