We saw at an AMD press event earlier in the year a clock matched 8 core Zen CPU take on a 8 core Broadwell-E CPU and the results were fairly even with a slight edge (that was likely cherry picked) to Zen. So to set my expectations for Zen and not knowing much about how Intel's enthusiast and consumer CPU's relate besides more cores, I thought I should ask... If Zen really is similar in performance to Broadwell-E at the same clock how does that compare to Intel's consumer CPU's Skylake and Kaby Lake?

I spend too much on my PC. Then I spend even more on my Sim Rig. Damn, this stuff's expensive.

Very similar. But also remember, take it with a lot of salt since it is an unreleased product. Remember, look at reviews of Zen before you buy.

Yeah I'm leaning towards getting a 7700K because the 6700K is the current best gaming part (cause clocks and IPC are higher priority than number of cores for gaming), but IF AMD show some info that is encouraging like a high base clock on their 4C 8T part then I'll look at Zen reviews as more than just a curiosity. I really don't like Intel or Nvidia because of their price strategy, I buy their stuff purely because AMD hasn't been able to compete on performance.

AMD can't compete with Intel CPUs currently (maybe after Zen) but AMDs GPUs often have better long-term optimization due to driver updates even if hey don't perform as well as their Nvidia counterparts, especially in older games.

Amd zen will have Ipc like hasweasel but clock like Broadwell so you are looking at 4.2-4.4ghz on ambient cooling.

IPC should be fairly similar,  but they might achieve higher clocks than zen.  So single thread performance should be slightly higher on kaby lake.

Oh and by the way,  kaby lake is identical to skylake as far as the cpu cores go.  Either way,  a 7700k is NOT worth the upgrade from a 6600k.

7700k Kaby lake is shaping up to be a total disappointment. It is Skylake with a very modest OC, and nothing more.

Ryzen is already looking pretty amazing, easily taking on the 6900k without any boost enabled.  Final optimizations before production plus their intelligent boost feature are sure to push clocks higher.

Some of their other stuff like built in neural networks and intelligent pre-fetch will also make it faster and more responsive compared to Intel.

Also, 4 cores is starting to fall behind compared to high core CPUs.  A lot of games are capable of using 8 cores (though not necessarily optimized for it) and we will see this trend continue in the wake of Ryzen CPUs going to market.  As in GPUs, AMD CPUs will tend to age very well.

Based on the information we have so far, Ryzen is going to be a game changer and deserves serious consideration for any system builder.

I know 6600k to 7700k won't be great leap, I'm just seeing enough bottlenecking on my 6600k that I'll take any upgrade I can get without going onto more expensive Intel's X99 platform (damn poorly optimised games). Now that we know a bit more about it, Ryzen is giving me some hope for more cores instead of clocks and Hyperthreading to help the situation out. Still I'm going to be looking not just for 8C 16T Ryzen reviews but also a direct head to head comparison against the 7700K with a 4C 8T Ryzen review. It's all up in the air at the moment.

i mean there LITTERALLY hasn't been an IPC bump compared to skylake . You're just as good getting a 6700k and OC.

I know there's no IPC improvement, that has been known for some time. Going by leaked parts the 7700k can overclock better than the 6700k and I will take every last bit of performance I can get without going to the expense of X99. But anyway no point in buying anything till we see Ryzen's final sku's and how they perform. Hopefully that rumour about January Zen launch is right, I want to get my system upgraded soon.
