Get the 780. It's just as powerful but $80 cheaper, therefore you can get an SSD and improve system performance.

Imagine how silly saying that will be if Mantle makes large improvements. Mind you, they aren't here yet, but still. Just saying.

If you play on 1920x1080 get a good aftermarket GTX 780 and overclock it, it will likely be faster than the 290X in the majority of games and the 3GB frame buffer will be enough.
If you play on 2560x1440 or higher, or if you play on multiple monitors the R9 290X will be the better option due to its better high-resolution performance and larger memory buffer.

I'd say go for the 780. Question: Have you already bougth the parts for that pc/ are you reusing parts?

My Pc: Cpu: I7 4790k @ 4,8 Ghz @1,25 volts, Motherboard: Maximus VII Formula, Graphicscard: 2x Titan X @1,4 at stock voltage (soon to be replaced), Ram: 32 gb Corsair Dominator Platinum 2133 Cl 9, SSD: 2x 850 Pro 1 Tb in Raid 0, 2x Samsung 840 Evo 1 tb raid 1,, PSU: Corsair HXi Series 1000W 80+ Platinum, Case: H440. Soon to be watercooled again, maybe, probably, the Titans are too loud.

1. Atm the 780 is the better card because it's cheaper and it's faster. 2. an ssd is an huge improvment so take the 780+ the ssd

I agree with him, it depends on your monitor... if youre only gaming on 1080p then grab 780+ssd

It's not faster.... It performs better at 1080p, but 290X performs better at 1440p+ resolutions... It's faster at certain resolution...

Maybe wait for the 290x non-reference, 290 (maybe non-reference also), 780Ti, and 780 GHz to come out.

Otherwise, the now buy would be 780 w/ SSD.

Yeah, I know. But you can already find 'GHz Edition' 780s that should keep up to the R9 290x for less than a 290x ;)

From what I have read Mantle is also going to be supported for Nvidia GPUs, so they may get the excat same sort of boost.

If AMD had aftermarket R9 290Xs then I would have recommended that but is not the case. Get the GTX 780, the prices have came down and also there are aftermarket coolers available for better overclocking.
