Help, Computer Generally Slow

Hey, I've been having this issue with my computer recently which I haven't been able to fix. Recently my pc has just generally been slow and stuttering or having major frame dips in some games (especially the division). I don't know whats going on but it was running fine a couple months ago. I built it myself and it has a i5 4690 and gtx 1070 at 1080p. I don't think there's any bottlenecking going on that could cause such huge frame dips. I know the gtx 1070 fe should be able to run the division ultra 60fps no problem. Maybe (i doubt it) I need more ram? I have 8gb right now.

Well, play the games you're having issues in, and look at CPU, GPU, RAM usage, temps, and see if anything is amiss!!!

What's your CPU/GPU/RAM/VRAM usage and CPU/GPU temps when the dips occur?

Ram usage is 42% on idle. Is this normal?

Not really, no. What's using it? Screenshot task manager, and sort your processes by RAM usage

This is a new development.

 

1. Run virus scan/MWB. clean your registry (CCleaner). See what programs are running at startup or in the background.

 

2. did you install a new driver? Try rolling back and seeing if that's the culprit.

That's not idle... that's with a browser and other things open. Which makes that number fine.

I have a anti virus software that does regular checks so I don't think thats the issue. I've been having issues before and after I updated the drivers. I'll try cleaning my registry.

No worries. That still gave us the info we were looking for. Now, please play a game and tell us CPU, GPU, and RAM usage, with GPU and CPU temps as well (I prefer MSI afterburner for this since it has all that info in one place with nice graphs, but whatever method you know will do)

Looks like you have a lot running in the background and (maybe) a bunch of unnecessary stuff. what does your startup tab look like? You can save a lot of resources by not having programs you are not actively using running in the background.

That stuff is for the most part just windows processes. he could deactivate cortana if he wants, but the non-optional stuff is pretty much just CAM and discord. which aren't that intensive (and I'm willing to bet CAM is an active window at the time of capture. haven't used it myself but I don't think it is that intensive)

I only have 3 medium-low impact processes on startup. some seem to start up anyways even though theyre disabled

I just looked up what cam is. That's taking a lot of CPU and RAM for a monitoring program. Cortana too, that's using a lot of CPU, I guess I don't use it though so I have it disabled. But yea, a screenshot doesn't tell us much about average usage of that. I guess I'm a minimalist with what I run. If I have a game loaded I have everything else closed.

I just turned it on to look at cpu and gpu temps + usage. I dont usually have it on startup.

Yeah, I would if I actually had a decent monitor, but considering I have a 1080p 60Hz panel, I just don't even care since my hardware can push so much more anyways

My taskbar's autohide is also always choppy and task manager takes forever to come up.

Fair enough. Like @tarfeef101 said, monitor CPU/GPU/RAM and temps during the game and look at what happens when you see issues. This should tell you something about where the issue might be.

Well, that's indicative of issues for sure. But please, do what I asked and run a game and give us the results. It will help a lot.

That seems like it could be related to the drivers or maybe a virus your scanner didn't catch. Issues in the desktop are deeper than just games. You can try an alternative virus scan like malwarebytes and a full fresh driver install using DDU to clear the old settings.
