Recommend me a low profile cooler for a 105W CPU.

Gerr

I have an old system running Linux and it has a Q6700 CPU with a 105W TDP.  I need to use its current case for another project, but have a 2U rackmount case I can use for it.  However, due to the positioning of the HDD's in that case, not even a Cryorig C7 will fit at 47mm.  I am sure a 40mm HSF will work, 42-44mm are a maybe.  Problem is I can't seem to find a HSF of that low profile that can handle a 105W TDP CPU without sounding like a turbine engine.  Anyone have any recommendations?

To sum up:

Socket: 775.

TDP: 105W

Height: 40mm or under, 41-44mm might work, no higher.

I presume you meant Zalman CPS8900 Extreme?  It's 60mm high, so can't use it.

Even without the top fan, the Noctua NH-L12 is 66mm high, so once again, can't use it.

Why not just go passive and let the case airflow do it's job?

2 in the front, 2 in the back? Or all in the front or back?

Since it's unlikely I will stress the CPU much, a 95W TDP HSF might work, any recommendations on those?

Frosty tech said it was suitable for 2U: http://www.frostytech.com/top5_lowprofile_heatsinks.cfm

So if you can't fit those in your rack, then you're going to have to find a huge heat sink block and make sure you have airflow going over it. If we had to go with the 1.5U rack on their recommendations none of those coolers would be suitable for 105W TDP.

I found the Scythe Kozuti CPU cooler and it seems to be able to do everything I need.  Supports Socket 775, is only 40mm in height, isn't super loud at max RPM, and does decently well on Frostytech's benchmarks.

This topic is about 2 months old but I still wanna give my two cents for anyone else who has this dilemma. As the OP said, Scythe Kozuti is a really good choice being 40mm high, but above 65W TDP it comes with a compromise: noise! Since it runs mostly at full speed under this kind of load, the higher TDP, the noisier and less efficient it becomes. However you can relieve some stress from its fan by adding another thin fan above the heat sink (such as Evercool EC8010M12CA - 10mm thick) which reduces fan speeds and improves cooling. Of course for the OP that's still 3mm above limit, but in case you have that clearance, at 50mm height the Scythe Kozuti with 2 fans is a pretty solid option for mini-ITX or similar builds.
