Still don't know what a SoC is

IAmAndre

Hi,

I just came across that FAP video released a month ago (not sure why YouTube puts it in my subscription feed instead of more recent videos), and I realized that I still don't know what a SoC is.

It is said in the video that they are basically multiple components in just one unit. Does it mean that memory (RAM and ROM) is embedded in? Otherwise, regular CPU's also have multiple components like onboard GPU, cache memory, etc. So what's actually the difference

I can see RAM and ROM soldered on the motherboard of cheap PC's too, so on this case, what are the other components embedded in the SoC, so I'm still not getting the difference.

Yup it is all on one chip.

WiFi cards are separated on cheap notebooks, but their CPUs are still called SoC 's

the lines are a bit vague, but in essence a "system on chip" means that everything you need for a working system is on one piece of silicon.

Ok but still... Those low-end Celeron CPUs don't have RAM embedded

I wouldn't consider them SoCs. But SoC is also a kind of loosely defined term. Some phone/tablet SoCs aren't all encompassing either, but they're still considered a SoC.

thats why i say it's a bit vague, ram is placed outside an soc very often.
