Can you still overclock G3258 with non-Z motherboards?

I have a G3258 lying around and am thinking of building a second PC with it.

Z97 motherboards are kind of expensive and I was thinking of buying a cheap B85 and H81 motherboard that supports overclocking.

Can you still overclock a G3258 on H81 or B85?

(Asking because I read that with Windows 10 the system bluescreens if you have a G3258 that is overclocked with a chipset other than Z97)

Yeah confirmed, read the reviews here https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/wMLypg/msi-motherboard-h81mp33

I would suggest using a cpu cooler that would also blow air over the VRM's (stock cooler might be good enough, not sure)

I have an i5-4460 cooler lying around as well. I am going to use that as it should provide better cooling :)

Yeah you should be able to hit 4.0 ghz on that cooler with no problems
(or so the internet tell me)

If that doesn't work then I am just going to grab a Hyper 212 Evo for $20 and call it a day xD

It probably won't OC as well as on z97 but it's doable. I've got one that I hit 4.4 with a 212evo in a b85.  Got it to 4.6 in my z97 though

Edit: I've not tried w10 on that machine

TBH, I don't really care about overclocking it that high, if that will come with a price premium. (which it does)

The Windows 10 issue has been fixed with the 2015 November update, btw if going cheap i recommend an asus h81 board, those do an amazing job at ocing that chip.

I have heard that the H81M-C is pretty good... Is there a specific one that you would recommend?

Well if you want to be sure go with the C, but to be honest I even saw great results with the A, so with asus its more about the CPU capabilities i think, but can't say for sure, what i would get for sure though is one with vrm heatsinks.

OK. thx
