It will definitely be better but depends on what games you play mostly.

Also if you can get that Xeon for cheap (lets say $20) then I would say go for it.

I'm using x5460 with GTX 960.
At Stock Speed, it will bottleneck most of the games but x5460 is very easily Overclocked at 4Ghz.

The only games which pushed my x5460 @4GHZ + GTX 960 to 99% Usage was:

  • OverWatch ( maxed setting, 1080p )
  • TomClancy Rainbow Six Seige ( Maxed Setting, 1080p)

Ryzen 5 3600 | MSI B450 Tomahawk Max | Corsair Vengeance lpx 32gb 3600mhz | EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 FTW3 ULTRA GAMING | XPG Core Reactor 850w

Expect maybe 5FPS increase in most games....is that worth $30 for you? You decide.

Would be more worth it if you could OC.

On Stock YES its gonna bottleneck in CPU Intensive Games for sure.
You can Get any LGA 775 Mobo like ASUS P5K-V, P5k-VM or P5K-Premium under $30.

There is a Huge Performance if x5460 can OCed @4ghz or more.
As i moved from Q9400 @3.6Ghz to x5460 @4GHz and performance is way more better in games.

But which i3?

http://ark.intel.com/compare/29765,33087

OK, it may be more than 5FPS since it is clocked quite a bit higher and has more Cache and supports faster RAM but it still be within 10FPS increase in most games.

Yes but he said he cant OC with his motherboard. Otherwise getting that CPU on 4GHz would be sweet.

For that socket... this Xeon is actualy good option.

Otherwise some used Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge i3 would be nice if you could get it bundled with motherboard for around $100.

for LGA 775 getting core 2 quads ( no matter how high you overclock ) its gonna bottleneck newer GPUs.
I'd Say get a Cheap ASUS Motherboard ( i mentioned name aboved  and tested that x5460 mode ) with decent CPU Cooler.
OR
Save up a lil more and switch to 2nd gen i5 setup.

If i were you i'd go with i5-3470.
But again for that you also need new mobo, ram.
