Hey folks!

Wanted some input on some tech before I got "Holy balls!" deep in the review sections of online periodicals and YouTube videos. I'd like to hear what y'all think about the Lyric by Honeywell and Nest, since I'm going digital thermostat very soon (as in the next 24-hours). My brother has a Lyric, and at first glympse it looks elegant, neat, and functional. Unfortunately I didn't get a whole lot of time to really play with it and the companion app. No experience with Nest *Sad face*.

So let's see what y'all have to throw out there - just keep the topic focused. I appreciate critical reviews as well as the ultra-positive,

Thanks y'all!

~ Gali

Just an update - I picked up a Nest, so if anyone has the same curiosities that I did, drop them here and I'll do my best to answer them. There are also several (It is YouTube after all) videos about the product, but first-hand reviews are usually the most forthcoming and honest.

I've never owned a nest, but didn't the nest device stop working when there is no internet. I'm sure that problem was fixed if it ever existed but there is nothing I hate more than Internet of things devices requiring internet services, and they are absolutely useless without it. I dont even live In a place with unstable internet but its also like the windows 10 thing, You dont know how much telemetry they are collecting. I love the idea of smart homes and more computer technology into homes, but It cant be a closed eco system.

That may be correct - it does require a WiFi connection to at the very least configure.

I see your point, at to a degree agree, but it's the convenience that I wanted. I like the power to manage my home while I'm away, be it security or environmentals, or whatever - it's a luxury for sure that no one really needs, but it's nice to have. I don't honestly care what data the government sniffs from me - my bank accounts don't look like a CEO's and I have nothing to hide information-wise. That being said, I fight for information privacy and every man's right to that privacy from prying eyes. That includes sales companies like Amazon, government entities, big data mining groups, etc.

Nest had improved a lot over the last few revisions. Just make sure you don't get one of the first two since they were plagued with issues.

I haven't used the lyric yet but Honeywell is always a pleasure to work with.

I personally use a Honeywell 8321r. My favorite stat and extremely reliable. They just put out a wifi version (8321wf) that does wifi without any additional modules (redlink)

Carrier has the "cor" but it's been nothing but a pain in my ass since I started using them. I've exchanged 20 of the 150 that I put in over the last year.

Hope you like your nest, and it serves you well for years to come!

Thanks for the response Chicken. I bought the 3rd gen, so to your point it is likely the one with fewer negatives.

My pops has put in several for his customers and (thus far) they are all terrifically pleased with the product. I'll drop a full review of it once I start to use it and push the limitation and package.

Thanks again!

  • 2 weeks later...

Alright, so an update to this topic.

Having a small issue when it comes to wiring the Nest. In upgrading it from my current thermostat, I found that the wiring in different than anything that Nest shows in their tutorials and what's listed on their support sites. Where some of the connections are labeled "R" on mine, they're listed as "Rc" and "Rh" on the nest. I'm getting into contact with an electrician I know to figure out exactly which wires go where as the designations are different. Wouldn't want to blow a circuit or worse by doing something in error.

Just for reference, I have a White-Rodgers model 1F82-54 (Purchased by Emerson Climate Technologies) thermostat with 7 wires total (See diagram 1 for visual example - ignore wire composition). So when compared to the Nest's configuration, although more extensive and expansive, is different in lettering convention.

From what I gather, the designations are in the table below. Still unclear as to what "E" and "L" are supposed to correspond to.

If there are any electricians out there or HVAC folks, I wouldn't mind at all hearing from y'all.

Thanks!
