Hey everyone,

Sorry if I assume something wrong here, I'm still learning.

So I have this setup:

  • Gigabyte GA-H87-HD3, LGA 1150, Intel H87
  • Intel Core I5-4670 Haswell 3.4Ghz 6MB L3 Cache LGA 1150 Quad-Core 4
  • VGA Sapphire ATI Radeon R9 280X 3GB VAPORX BOOST GDDR5 PCI-Express

All running with stock fans, even the I5. It ran well since 2014, played a lot of BF4.

But now with BF1, it's going off the hills. My CPU usage is almost 100%, and the temperature is almost there too (100ºC).

BUT, and here is my question, sometimes it is running as low as 60% usage on the CPU but still, 100ºC.

I was wondering if right now, is it better to invest in a better cooling for the CPU or a better CPU all together?
Will the 4670 (not k) hold together a bit more? I'm not trying to squeeze 60fps (even tho BF1 runs at 60fps on medium now).

So what would be a better investment?

Better cooling for the CPU or Better CPU? I was wondering if a AIO like X61 from NZXT would help...

Well, it's clear something is horribly wrong.

I would reapply thermal paste and make sure the CPU cooler is mounted properly.

Also i would try to keep useage of the cpu to a minimum, such high temps aren't exactly healthy...

If you want my attention, quote meh! D: or just stick an @samcool55 in your post :3

Whelp, I'm an idiot. (I blame that on finals)

Anyways...

After reapplying thermal paste if the temperatures don't go down much, I'd recommend using a Hyper 212 Evo for an 84W TDP chip. An AIO is just overkill. For my Xeon 8-core 130W TDP chips, the 212 works just fine. I don't have the numbers off the top of my head, but if I remember correctly they were between 50-55C, compared to my Asetek 570LC, which got about 45C Max. I switched out even though I got that cooler for $40. Just didn't work with my case and the 212 Evo works just fine and has no risk of leaking or pump dying.

A non oc cpu should not have that high temps. My i5 4460 doesn't go past 70-80 w/ stock cooler

So much good answers here, thanks guys, I feel stupid for not thinking about the paste before.

Will do all that tonight, maybe reattach the cooler and everything to make sure and will let you know.

Thanks everyone

Agreed give that a go, but even if it does bring temps down a bit I would seriously consider buying an aftermarket cooler. They can be as cheap as £20 and dropped my temps from around 80 under load to 60. Was really impressed.

If you go AIO which I've recently down, my temps are now around 45 under load and that's OC'd ;)

don't forget to remove dust while you're at it

Since its a Stock Cooler cleaning the cooler entirely with a toothbrush really is highly recommended, Stock Coolers works "fine" but they usually retain more dust than the specialized ones having a performance decrease sooner than you'd expect on specialized ones.

Finding videos in youtube of how to are extremely easy.
