Motherboards have a certain socket that only fits that specific socket cpus.

 

Frequency isn't an issue with motherboard support, but other factors like tdp may be.

A motherboard will need to match the socket type and sometimes required chipset in order to support a CPU. 

 

For example, an Intel i7 3770K uses the LGA 1155 socket, so needs a motherboard with that socket in order to work. It would not work with an LGA 1151 Socket motherboard.
