Good morning everyone!

I am currently running two ASUS 780 Poseidon in SLI and OC, pared with a i7 4770k and 32GB of  DDR3 RAM. After the Christmas Season, i am planning to upgrade the two 780s to one 1080. I am wondering if the performance increase is noticeable, because i cant find any helpful comparison from Kepler to Pascal. Maybe i should even wait for the 1080 ti or AMD Vega ?  Never the less, even if the performance increase is not that noticeable i really want to get rid of all the SLI-Problems.

So i am curious what you guys (unisex) think, of what I should buy and when their could be a sweet spot in price in the early 2017?

Thank you in advance for your help  and your comments.

Greetings from Germany,

Tyrannis

It'll be very noticeable. but with such setup, I'd wait for Vega and see if it's good or not before upgrading. Vega is coming pretty soon, considering 2017 is very close from now.

Well a single 1080 is faster than a 980 2 way SLI setup so you will see an increase over the 780 SLI setup you have. As for the 1080 ti, it could never come out, or it could come out tomorrow, who knows.

I spend too much on my PC. Then I spend even more on my Sim Rig. Damn, this stuff's expensive.

Well you have 3 options

1) Get a 1080.

2) Wait for 1080Ti

3) Wait for Vega (if you are prepared to switch teams)

It all depends on how patient you are.

If you don't want to wait, go 1080.

The other 2 options are probably somewhere Q1 2017. That can be January, but also March.

Because you can go 1080 i doubt it's worth to wait for the 1080ti or vega. In the worst case that's a 4-ish months wait. At least if there aren't any supply issues like polaris had.

I would wait, but i also know that's what most people won't do, i waited 10 months for polaris and 1 year for haswell, which almost nobody does...

Performance will stay the same or drop. Dual 780's simply have more compute power even talking sli into account.

I suggest you look at some benchmarks. Multiple testers have found Nvidia's claim at the 1080's launch of a single 1080 beating a 980 SLI setup to be accurate.

No, a 1080 is more powerful. It's twice as fast effectively as a single 780, but doesn't introduce SLI issues and it's shitty 50% scaling, meaning it'll be at least 50% faster.

You're doing it wrong if you even think that there are "teams" here. Value for money and performance are our team.

Sorry, my own numbers that I benched 4 months ago must be wrong then. Of course it's possible that driver updates have rendered my numbers wrong.

I agree with that, but the problem is that the amount of people that think like that are in a minority.

If we all bought our cards by comparing value for money, the battle between AMD and Nvidia would be not even close to what it is today.

When I paid $1295 AUD for my GTX 1080 it wasn't without cursing Nvidia and their international price structure. I'd love to buy AMD, but when you want the best performance at this point in time you need to pay the Nvidia Tax.9_9

Hey everyone,

thank you so much for your answers so far. I did look for 1080 vs 980 / ti SLI comparisons, but thought that their are more comparisons between the Kepler and Pascal Cards, because I thought, that people usually skip a generation. Maybe 4k stimulated people the last two years. I could wait performance wise , but i feel it gets harder everyday to find same games that support SLI out of the box and i really want to stop looking for fixes before i start playing.  I am really looking for the best performance i could get (but i will not buy a Titan), so therefor i don´t care about "teams", even if I would prefer AMD over NVIDIA (policy wise).

Thanks again,

Tyrannis

I'd say it depends on you're going. Using a single Titan black on 1080 i play better then using a gtx 1080 on 1440. Even using single or sli Titan black I play better on 1440. Not sure if it'd because of all the pixels or the quality or I'm not used to the level of detail I can use with the newer card. I'm using half the power, so for the sake of my power bill I'm gonna try and continue to use the new card. I regret buying two new cards more then I do the new monitor.
