Hi guys, found this article on using windows 10 without a product key, and I'm wondering if it's true. A quick google search has conflicting information, and some firsthand information would be great. A friend of mine is building soon and he could save himself $100 by getting this. Thanks for your help!

It seems with Windows 10 the only disadvantage to not activating the product is a water mark on the screen and a locked desktop background image

There are other things, mostly annoyances though. MS is not worried so much about the DRM aspect of their OS anymore since the last 3 versions of Windows was pirated pretty hard. If you want the premium features then you have to pay.

Hm, I wonder why. People don't want to pay $300 for retail windows XP. Well no shit sherlock. Then you expect them to pay again, and again, to upgrade and keep them "safe?" Yeah no.

Apple figured it out many years ago. If you want people to upgrade for safety, give them the upgrade for free.

I'm glad microsoft finally sorta... figured it out.

Apple could do that because they primarily sell hardware. And they started having a software store ecosystem rolling.  Microsoft primarily sells software. It just took them a while to get a similar ecosystem going to a point that they could not charge as much for an OS. Well, for one year anyway.

Not that Microsoft probably cares anyway. Consider this:

  • Most people don't buy Windows outright, it comes with the computer they purchased.
  • Microsoft gives licenses practically for free anyway to system builders.
  • People rarely upgrade to a new OS because well, every time Microsoft makes a new version of Windows, they change the face of the OS enough that it makes people nervous. The one thing Apple has going for them is using macOS now isn't really any different from using Mac OS X 10.0

And Microsoft doesn't care that you pirated Windows or not. It's the fact you're using Windows.

All good points.

I'm actually nervous to see what apple does next with mac OS 11? Whatever the next mac os is. It's been the same for so long at this point. And Apple doesn't have a good track record right now...

There probably won't be a major revision to the macOS kernel for the foreseeable future. Or any major changes. Hence why Apple rebranded it into macOS instead of keeping it as Mac OS X.

The latter can be gotten around because they forgot to lock out the set desktop image option in the right click menu.

$300.00 for XP? I never paid more than $120 for retail and $200 for Professional. Need to work on those facts.

Be a bit more respectful when replying to others, your "Well no shit sherlock." comment is unwarranted.

Of course this is legitimate. I run an unactivated copy of Windows Server 2012 R2 just for testing purposes, but I've run every OS under the sun that lets you get by with no product key unactivated at some point or another

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2
