Hello all, I am looking into building a thin mini-ITX build for a lighting computer (stage lighting) that needs to render some 3d models for effects.

Currently, what I have to work with is a Sandy Bridge Celeron with an HD 5450. So, anything I get these days is going to be a massive improvement. But, if I go into a 3d rendering of my stage on my i3-6100 (HD 530) i'm only getting around 10fps when I start to render my lighting scenes. While preferably I would get something with a gtx 1050, I can't really find a case that is small enough for the space requirements. So, it's integrated GPUs only and I can't really decide between an Intel and an AMD chip. I know that Intel is always going to win hands down when it comes to CPUs, but what about when I'm just going to be maxing out the iGPU instead of the CPU?

So far, this is where I'm at in my build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/YQ6PQV

Rationale:

It needs to be very small, i'm currently looking at the Silverstone PT13 to house my motherboard and case and I would get the one with the included power supply.

I want the boost in graphical power that you would get from going to an AMD APU, however; my heart is not set on it because... it's AMD and way less efficient than a Skylake chip.

Looks like that ECS motherboard is the only slim mini-ITX that supports the fm2+ socket so that's my only option if I go the AMD route.

And finally, the CPU is the 7860k because I can't really go above a 65w TDP and it seems to be the highest performing APU in the TDP range.

Problem:

I can't seem to find an FM2 cooler that is below the maximum height clearance for the case (which has to be at most 30mm). I've gotten close, https://www.quietpc.com/rv-vanxie, but I can't seem to get to where I need to on this.

Questions:

  1. Any idea if I could to squeeze that cooler in to that case?
  2. Should I just forget this and get a NUC?
  3. Should I just build a skylake thin mini-ITX build and not worry about the differences in graphical performance?
  4. Should I do something else entirely?

Id probably get a dell optiplex micro or a nuc.

Skylate is about the same gpu power. If you want faster than a apu, get a broadwell chip

Okay, I'm assuming that the new kaby lake nucs you can get for like $350 are probably my best bet then?
