RTS, Trying Too Hard?

Go to solution Solved by ARikozuM,

Age of Empires 1/2/3. Still playing them to this day.

So, I've just been looking at sudden strike 4 on steam, and... well, to be completely honest, I'm completely unimpressed by it.

I remember sudden strike 1, and 2, and being completely engrossed in them, and now looking at the footage, quite the opposite.

is it just me, or have games in this genre become more focused on pretty explosions and nice graphics over core gameplay?

Now, i haven't played it (SS4), so maybe I'm just looking at the media footage and being unimpressed by that, but it seems the same for most RTS games nowadays.

I had hours of fun on C&Q, Total Annihilation, SS1, 2, 3(? a coldwar version?) and now the modern equivalent seem unimpressive, even if they do look "better".

do any of you agree with me here, or am i just raving mad?

and, if so, can you recommend any good games on that style?

I bought age of Empires 2 HD but struggled to get into it as I was mostly used to Empire Earth. I must give it another go. I have to admit that 3 looks great, so I'll try that after 2 lol.

2 is my favorite as the multiplayer balance is the best I've seen in any RTS without being a damn gimmick like Starcraft.

I could also recommend HuniePop.

I'll definitely try it again, multiplayer RTS I seem to struggle with, unless local, i build a wheel and they're already nuking me - kinda thing... lol. I never said I was good! I just miss the old style games... I'm only 25! haha!

HuniePop isn't an RTS. It's a puzzle game where you're vying for the affections (to put it mildly) of girls. I usually put it in for people looking for a good shooter or RTS as a joke.

after watching the gameplay videos on it, you know what? i think I've been sold another RTS game haha. think its worth getting the escaltion version? hopefully they'll be on sale over xmas...? xD

I have the base version and I like it. It doesn't have the same "feel" as AoE 2 but it was very fun for my time with it.

I know you want RTS, but have you considered any shooters with command elements like Mass Effect?

I enjoyed my time with HuniePop. Around the 10th puzzle (on Alpha), you start thinking hard before making moves since you only have about 3 tries for errors.

I've played mass effect on xbox years ago, and loved it. havent seemed to get into 3 on pc for some reason.

CoH looks great, but lacks the overall grandeur I think i'm looking for, I've already bought some but the small scale squad battles aren't quite the war i have in mind haha.

the games I used to love to play were warcraft 2, C&Q, TA,

I'll try Ashes out and give a replay of AE2 though. any other suggestions? (steam sales closing in haha)

half my previous reply was in response to yourself lol.

Glad its not just me. I don't care how good/bad the graphics are, the ability to place troops in buildings and ambush the enemy on the street was awesome lol, obviously much more important variations of gameplay have made a difference in enjoyment o me, but surely developers realise a difference between realism and graphical fidelity? (then again... do I? lol)
