Hi all,

I've had a Raspberry Pi 3 that I've been tinkering with and I started wondering, is it possible to load pfSense on it and run a pretty ghetto pfSense system off of it using USB to ethernet adapters? Most of the computers in my house are wired and connected through a backbone Juniper ex2200 switch, and the only wireless devices are IOT devices like light switches and plugs. Would this be possible, and if it is, would this be remotely effective.

Thanks

You can run pfsense, but you can use linux.

For the router, Get something like a  edge router, or this https://netgate.com/products/sg-1000.html

Its gonna be slow, and your not gonna be able to run anything fancy on it at all.

You can also do it with the one port with vlans.

I was considering doing this as a proof of concept experiment, the pi's just been sitting on my desk collecting dust as its not being used for anything right now.

Then fire it up a have fun, i wouldn't use it as your main router.

PFSense on armhf is an interesting topic right now. I know that a dev at pfsense managed to get it running from an rpi 2, but there havn't been any updates on it since. The reason they havn't released it is most likely due to the kernel needing SERIOUS reworking in order to run on armhf (rpi architecture). So as @Electronics Wizardy stated, you can use linux with some routing and firewalling to make a router, but it would take some linux knowledge.

My native language is C++
