You'll need a new cpu and motherboard, possibly new ram.

Case might be a tight fit since it's a prebuilt. PSU is probably crap.

Hard drive is reusable, but you will need a new Windows license since you are changing motherboard.

Might as well buy a new PC.

What's the rest of the PC's specs? A model number would be good too.

Budget?

Current specs?

If you have a fx 4xxx/6xxx or any fm2 cpu an i5 or an i7 is a good upgrade. I would suggest skylake since newer ddr4 ram isn't too expensive.

If you have an fx 8xxx/9xxx. Those are comperable to an i5 if you want a significant upgrade I would only look at i7s.

That CX850M can be reused, as well as that graphics card.

The case, as long as it's ATX-compliant and can physically fit the new motherboard, can be reused (chances are it is). Make sure you don't get a motherboard that's too big for your case, like an ATX board in a microATX case, or an EATX in an ATX case that does not support EATX boards.

You can reuse any SATA-based devices (hard drives, SSDs, optical drives).

OEM Windows keys aren't transferable, and if it's a prebuilt PC, they are almost certainly using an OEM key. If you're going to switch motherboards more than just this one time, buy a retail key directly from Microsoft, as they're transferable (but expensive). However, you can also buy another OEM key for much cheaper. I'd first build your PC and see if the existing installation works first before doing anything.

RAM is reusable, but only if your new motherboard supports the RAM. If you're getting a Skylake motherboard, most of them have DDR4 slots instead of DDR3, which you'll need to buy new RAM. You can buy Skylake boards with DDR3 slots if you really wanted to, though.

The main differences are going to be in your motherboard and CPU. Those have to be changed.

From experience Windows 10 doesn't care if you switch boards, I've used a Windows 7 license from an HP prebuilt to activate Windows 10 on my MacBook Pro. I did that with my desktop too.

Good to know. Wasn't like this in the past. Do you know if this is an official thing with WIndows 10?

Not sure, I do know that MS officially allows you to use Windows 7 and 8 keys on 10 though.

It will deactivate if you switch boards AFTER you upgrade to windows 10, beforehand it doesn't matter.

So basically someone can buy a dirt cheap windows 8 oem key, and use it to install windows 10?

If you contact Microsoft support with the "contact support" app they'll give you a new product key or reactivate your current one, I've done it before.

Is there any amd cpus that are somewhat equivalent to a intel i5 or i7

No. The highest you can go with AMD at the moment is a 9590 and they're not worth the money. You are much better off buying an i5 6500 or similar with a simple motherboard and some DDR4 RAM as was suggested earlier. You could also go with a slightly older Haswell setup with an i5 4590 or similiar and an H97 motherboard, both are very easy to find new or used still and would allow you to save some money by reusing your current RAM.

Or you can hold off and wait for AMD to release Zen soon. But any which way you go you are looking at a major overhaul as Zen will be on a completely new platform as well.

The New Machine: Intel 11700K / Strix Z590-A WIFI II / Patriot Viper Steel 4400MHz 2x8GB / Gigabyte RTX 3080 Gaming OC w/ Bykski WB / x4 1TB SSDs (x2 M.2, x2 2.5) / Corsair 5000D Airflow White / EVGA G6 1000W / Custom Loop CPU & GPU

The Rainbow X58: i7 975 Extreme Edition @4.2GHz, Asus Sabertooth X58, 6x2GB Mushkin Redline DDR3-1600 @2000MHz, SP 256GB Gen3 M.2 w/ Sabrent M.2 to PCI-E, Inno3D GTX 580 x2 SLI w/ Heatkiller waterblocks, Custom loop in NZXT Phantom White, Corsair XR7 360 rad hanging off the rear end, 360 slim rad up top. RGB everywhere.

The 9590 can come close if you are managing to push all the cores, but those CPUs run extremely hot and will probably require a better motherboard than what you currently have. It's not recommended.

Not much of an upgrade from an 8100 honestly. You might see a slight boost but nothing groundbreaking.

I mean i think that puts me in range of staying near the middle of minimum and recommended of most games released now until i can put away some extra money to get it all together.

IMO , you should wait for zen . Even if it isn't as good as planned , there still will be price drops . and if it IS good , then we're all in for a treat.

The problem is between an 8100 and an 8350 the only difference is clock speed and a tiny bit of an architecture change. You won't see any big gains at all so save your money and wait.
