I'm building a computer that's mostly gaming and lightweight server.

I will have a recurring backup process from the internals > external (and looking into some cloud and/or burning BD options).

Any recommendations for storage?

Current list (incomplete):

I'm thinking 1 SSD for os/apps, 1+ HDDs (internal) for everything else, and something (?) for external backup.

Try posting the permalink to your PCPartpicker list. The url you have given is only for your pc.

What kind of server applications do you plan on running?

My current pc also functions as a Plex server and part time as a virtualisation host.

Similar, I'll run a cloud server, ~12 VMs (would love to use OpenStack but I think that needs different hardware, something separate from the mostly-gaming light-server computer), and Plex server.

Gaming = windows.

Virt. server = linux.

(Plex can be either way.)

I'll boot windows when gaming, otherwise leave it running on linux for server purposes the rest of the time.

Setting the gaming aspects of it aside...

The Plex side is a must-have for viewing/listening goodness.

The virtualization side is necessary as a transition-type service, where I'm currently using OpenStack through a paid service, but would like to have my own multi-VMs setup on the new computer. I plan on transitioning to separate OpenStack dedicated hardware as I wean myself off of the paid cloud service and just run the whole IaaS myself. I can go with a generic VM setup as an in-between type thing.
