Internet slowed down dramatically after installing router

Hi I just installed the d-link n 300 router and connect to my landlord's telus modem/router and now my connection has slowed down compared to connecting to landlord's router via wifi (from 10-15 Mbs to 1 Mbs) both with ethernet and wifi. Can anyone explain the reason for this? my router does not have gigabit ethernet

What happens if you connect to the modem directly?
